The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, January 11, 1984 Dutchman Bantams "Player of the Week" Chris Beck No. 12 Left Wing TOROS OVERCOME COBOURG "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." This old adage certainly would apply to the Major Bantam Toros last Monday evening in Cobourg. Their manpower being depleted by 4 left them with only 11 players and their two goalies playing against a team that has been breathing down their necks looking for a win after tying the previous 2 contests. The Tors were not to be taken lightly as they dug deep and came up with a 6-3 win in the strength of John Romano's 4 goal performance (including a natural hattrick) and a pair from Mike Gallant. The line of Romano, Gallant and Chris Shmyr accounted for all the points in the game except one as Shmyr had 5 assists, Gallant had 4 and Romano earned 2. The other assist went to Jamie Lever on Romano's second goal. Several of the rear guards had a chance to play "forward for a night" and from watching the game they certainly looked like they ■ enjoyed themselves especially in the hitting department. David Smith certainly did his part as he faced 36 shots while the Toros showered the opposition with 28. This was one of the rare times when the Toros have been outshout by their opposition. TOROS HUMILIATE OSHAWA Standing beside two Oshawa fans last Thursday watching the Toros play their boys the question overhead by this writer was "What's wrong with our boys?" The answer is simple, they were simply outclassed as the Toros handed them a 7-0 beating. It was a real treat for the Toros fans as their team displayed fine hockey skills, especially passing in one of the best games they have played in a •while. It certainly was a team effort as the goals were spread between 6 players with Brian Noble netting a pair and singles earned by Jamie Downing, John Romano, Mike Gallant, Chris Beck and Chris Shmyr. Downing and Romano's goals were solo efforts but assists on the others went to Romano - 2, „. . Perris - 2, Beck - 2, McArthur - 202, 1, Pithie - 1 and Page - 1. 235. Bowmanville peppered the Oshawa goalie with 51 shots while Scott Webster put in a very fine performance of his own stopping 22 to earn his shutout. MAJOR BANTAMS WIN ON Y.C.D. Although Oshawa Black Hawks were the guests of the Major Bantam Toros for Young Canada Day, the hosts were less than hospitable as they beat their opposition by a 10-2 margin. Scott Page was the top scorer of the contest with a hattrick while a pair were scored by Jamie Downing and Chris Beck and singles earned by John Romano,- Mike Gallant and Brian Noble. George Pithie ; led the team in assists for the day with 4 followed by Armstrong - 3, Noble - 3, Shmyr - 2 and solos by Colwell, Rekker, McArthur, Downing, Gallant and Beck. Congratulations to Brian Noble who was selected as star of the game and to Kelly Armstrong who was named M.V.P. for the Toros team. TOROS CLOSE IN ON 300th GOAL Behind the four goal performance performance by Chris Beck the Toros handed Trenton a 7 - 1 thrashing on Sunday afternoon afternoon and edged closer to their 300th goal of the season. After this game with Trenton they only have to score three more goals to hit their 300 plateau and will probably accomplish this on Tuesday night at home against Belleville. The Trenton contest was one of the roughest the Toros have been in and also, one of the / worst displays of officiating ' witnessed by the crowd. Brian Noble,' George Pithie and Chris Shmyr added singles to_ .add to Beck's four goals and 1 Beck, Noble, Page and Downing Downing earned two assist each while singles went to McArthur, Pithie, Romano and Gallant. The team is headed to Woolwich Woolwich for a tournament on the coming weekend and should see pretty good competition as they will probably meet Simcoe and or Woolwich who are both itching to play the Toros, especially Woolwich as we defeated them in the All Ontario Finals last season.
