Bethany News Item On Sunday, December 18, two very meaningful Christmas Christmas services were held in Bethany United Church: At the regular morning service, service, immediately following the organ prelude, the choir favoured with their first.' anthem, "The Birthday of King." Rev. Lindsay .weF-" ' corned the large congrégation and drew attention to the announcements. announcements. Following this, the lighting of the fourth Advent candle was performed by Mr. and Mrs. Peter Beer and their family, Jeffery and Andrea. During the children's time, they and Rev. Lindsay completed completed the construction of the 'symbolic' church of God which has been underway for the past three or four weeks. This time a steeple and some 'people.' Rev. Lindsay's sermon topic was "Can you Imagine That?" ( the magnitude of God and his love). As a second anthem the choir rendered the beautiful Welsh carol, "All Poor Men and Humble" a favourite of former minister, Rev. John Pinion Jones. For the Annual Candlelight Carol Service held in the evening, evening, members of the congregations congregations of St. Paul's Anglican Church, Pontypool United and Thomas Moore Roman Catholic Catholic parish joined with those of Bethany United. The sanctuary sanctuary was beautifully lit be candelebra and individual candles nestled in evergreen wreaths. Rev. Lindsay was joined in the pulpit by Rev. John Brownhill of St. Paul's with each sharing in the meditation and the reading of the scripture scripture passages. Rev. Brownhill also explained the ritual of the 'blessing of the creche' which is traditional in the Anglican church. Rev. To understand understand the meaning of the Advent candles is to help the Christ candle and the reality of Christ to burn more brightly in all our lives. Adding much to the service were the many special musical selections. A beautiful beautiful solo "The Birthday of a King" was rendered by Mrs. Helen Fry, Janetville; a quartette quartette from Thomas Moore Parish offered two selections - a Polish carol, sung in both Polish and English, and a traditional Jewish song of joy. The Bethany United Church choir favoured with three selections, "O Ye Joyful People", "O Holy Night" (with solo parts by Carolyn Porteous and Nelly Michel) and a setting of "While Shepherds Watched" by John Innés. The singing of many carols of invitation, hopeful anticipation, anticipation, wonder, response to the wondrous news of the Saviour's birth culminated with the singing of the most joyous and exciting of all, "Go tell it on the Mountain." He agreed that further action is needed by staff and council. In his observations made at the council meeting marking the start of the town's 10th anniversary, . Mayor Rickard called for a'review of all town-owned properties so that the town can dispose of land and buildings which are unnecessary unnecessary and fully utilize what is available. available. "The Town of Newcastle, through amalgamation, owns over 50 buildings buildings and properties," Mayor Rickard Rickard explained. "The time has most surely come when we must have a needs study of our buildings, such as we did a few years ago with our roads and streets." He pointed out that the town's administration administration is currently spread over four buildings. Mayor Rickard suggested that the town's administrative centre could be funded from a special reserve of cash already set aside for upgrading upgrading the town's administrative capabilities. He called for thorough research into funding available for refurbishing refurbishing the Town Hall as an arts centre. In both cases, as little impact impact as possible should be left on the tax levy, Mayor Rickard added.
