Letter to the Editor January 3,1984 Dear Johnny: A Tradition Started? . The New Year's Levee held in the Council Chambers by Mayor Rickard and some of the members of Council on January 1st was indeed a delightful affair. In attendance besides elected elected officials and many of the administrative staff were Gary Herrema, our Regional Chairman, Allan Lawrence M.P., Sam Cureatz, our newest O.C. and M.L.A., His Honour Richard E. Lovekin, former Darlington Clerk, Walter Rundle, and Building Inspector, Charles Warren, retired Fire Chief, James Hayman, former Councillors, Kirk Entwisle and Bill Clarke, Mel Garland, the President of Durham College, representatives representatives from our Separate and Public School Boards, Library Board, Committee of Adjustment Adjustment and Hospital Board. We couldn't help noting that ratepayers were in attendance from all walks of life and more importantly from all areas of Newcastle. The conviviality and handshaking was spontaneous spontaneous and goodwill expressions expressions for 1984 abounded. A good omen for the new year. It's too bad all of the Councillors Councillors couldn't have experienced it. It must also be said that the refreshments were excellent and modest and the speeches short. A real winner to start off the New Year! Congratulations to Mayor Rickard, his Council and staff for celebrating our 10 years as a municipality with our first levee. May the goodwill goodwill apparent at the levee pervade the deliberations of Council in 1984. We hope the levy becomes an annual tradition.
