On Wednesday night, the Juveniles sporting the new look of the long pants hosted Port Perry and after a slow start came away 5-2 winners. Bowmanville lead 2-0 after the first period; 4-2 after the second period and scored once in the third period for the 5-2 victory. Scoring for St. Marys were Dan Weir - 2 goals, Grant Gibson, Don Daigle and Trevor Martyn. Assists went to Scott Richards - 2, Steve Taylor - 2, Deryk Clark, Ron Hopcroft, Dan Coombes, Grant Gibson and Glen Mathews. On Young Canada Day, St. Marys hosted Trenton and came up with a 6-2 victory. The first period was a well played period with each team scoring once. Bowmanville took a 4-1 second period lead on 2 short handed goals. Bowmanville outscored Trenton 2-1 in the third period for the 6-2 victory. Jeff Vyfschaft and Don Hayes shared the goal-tending duties which provided the major difference in the two teams' play. Scoring for Bowmanville were Scott Richards - 2 goals, Dan Weir, Deryk Clark, Ron Hopcroft and Roger Hornsby. Martin then came back with his second goal of the game to tie it up with the assists going to Kenny Desmedt and Scott Cole. Pickering, again regained regained the lead 3 - 2 near the end of the period on a goal by Bill Clarke. David Fairey made it a 3 - 3 tie just 27 seconds into the third period on a goal assisted by Paul Stainton and Kenny Desmedt. Brent MacKay gave Bowmanville the lead for the first time in the game and they never looked back. Brent's goal was assisted by Paul Martin and Mike Houston. The Martin, Houston, MacKay line combined again to give Bowmanville a 5 - 3 lead as Mike Houston scored on a slap shot with the assists going to both his line mates. David Fairey of Bowmanville then rounded out the scoring by getting his second goal of the game to make it 6 - 3. It was a great individual effort by Fairey as he took a perfect pass from Dave Smith, moved across the blueline, around one defenceman and then the other and then made a fine move to beat the Pickering goalie. Defeat Orono 4-1 As part of the Young Canada Day activities held at the Darlington Arena, the Fifth- Wheel Toros played Orono and skated away with a 4 - 1 victory. Mike Houston opened the scoring for Bowmanville in the first period with the assist going to Kenny Desmedt. David Fairey gave the Toros a 2 - 0 lead as he scored with the assists going to Paul Stainton and Kyle Virtue. Although Bowmanville leads 2 - 0, Orono had several scoring chances in the period only to be stopped by Travis Martyn who started in goal for Bowmanville. Saturday, Jan. 7,1984 Play in Brighton Tourney After participating in the Young Canada Day activities in Bowmanville this morning, the Toros had to make a quick change and head down the 401 to Brighton for an eleven o'clock game against Napanee. In the first period, it just took the Bowmanville squad seven seconds before Paul Stainton scored to make it 1 - 0 with the assists going to David Fairey and Kenny Desmedt. Napanee then scored near the end of the first period on a goal by Andrew McGreer while the Toros were playing two men short. Bowmanville played most of the first period short- handed alloWikig Napanee to keep the pressure on the Toros. Sunday, Jan. 8,1984 Lose out to Brighton After that nail-biting game against Napanee, the Fifth- Wheel Bantam Toros had to return to Brighton this morning morning to play the host club in the first game of the elimination round. Bowmanville opened the scoring at 6:58 of the first period on a goal by Scott Burns assisted by Mike Houston. The score remained that way until the last twenty seconds of the 2nd period when Brighton's Tony Dhaene finally finally beat Toros' goalie Kevin Zarosky. Prior to that, Zarosky came up with some fine stops to keep Bowmanville's Bowmanville's lead. In the third period, Brighton went ahead 2 - 1 as Brian Ryckman scored on a goalmouth goalmouth scramble in front of the Bowmanville net. Brighton then got the insurance goal late in the period.
