Mrs. Cathcart visited with them last Thursday in Toronto, also with her mother Mrs. Emma Davies. Sympathy goes to Mrs. Barb. Holland in the passing of her mother Mrs. Annie Gibson on Saturday, January 7 in Oshawa General. Funeral and a service in Oshawa on January 9th with interment in Sterling, Ont. with a service there also. Kendal W.I. The Kendal W.I. met at the home of Mrs. Helen Ceuroux with eight members present. In the absence of Mrs. Barb Holland^ President, and Heather Caraso, Vice President, the Secretary Mrs. Janet Dykeman and Treasurer Mrs. Del Gossen took over the meeting. Mrs. Dykeman read the minutes of the two last meetings and Mrs. Gossen gave the financial report. Discussions on catering for coming wedding were held as well as a banquet luncheon of another association. Then came plans for Penny Sale which will be held April 28 on a Saturday in the Kendal School. Quilt pattern was decided and assorted prints were brought in for the quilt. Mrs. Dorothy Tiiransky had the program on "Its your neves" a seminar she recently attended in Bowmanville. She read several articles on this, also passed around several brochures, which is all about drug abuse and alcoholism. President Mrs. Burrows welcomed all and opened the meeting with a poem - "Healthy Prayer." The Institute Ode was sung and Mary Stewart Collect reported in unison. The Roll Call "Name the poem after listening to lines quoted from an old school reader." Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. The correspondence was read being several "thank you" notes for gifts received at Christmas. Also a card and note from our foster child Bernita Johnson. Collection was received. Mrs. B. Renton chaired the program. * Newcastle Mayor Garnet Rickard started a three-week diet last Thursday, January 12, with a weigh-in at the Bowmanville Rotary Club. For every pound that the mayor loses, Bowmanville Rotarians are pledging funds to help two Durham Region residents who are paralysed and in need of special equipment. Assisting with the official kick-off is Durham East MPP Sam Cureatz (left) who is managing the project and helping to collect pledges. At right is Dr. H. Jethalal, the official weighmaster. Mrs. Alice White introduced the speaker of the afternoon. Mr. Roy Norton, Bowmanville, Bowmanville, with his 'Seeing Eye' dog. His wife, Jane, also accompanied him. He told us of his experiences as a blind person, before getting his dog, being taught the way to know and how to handle her and getting used to her. The girl who worked with him had been doing this for 9'A years. There is a school in Montreal and one opening in Oakville. There was also a film - what to do when you meet a blind person. There are 40 blind persons in Town of Newcastle and 10 seeing eye dogs in Durham Region. Mr. Norton got his dog in the United States and also received his training there. His dog was three years old in December. Mrs. Winacott introduced the entertainment guests, Raggedy Ann and Andy. Mrs. Bonnie Cowle, Mrs. Ruth Cowle and Mrs. Jean Lepine who favored with songs accompanied by Ruth Cowle on accordian. A hearty vote of thanks was expressed to all. Mrs. W. Brown expressed thanks from the Maple Grove group. Mrs. Burrows closed meeting with the Lord's Prayer. Lunch and social time enjoyed.
