l ) 12 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, January 18,1984 Dutchman Bantams "Player of the Week" BRIAN NOBLE No. 14 Centre Toros Top Three Hundred In their 49th game of the season, the Toros reached the 300 goal plateau last Tuesday night at home against Belleville Belleville when they dumped their visitors 7 - 1. The only goal in the first came off the stick of Jamie Lever with a slapshot just outside his point position on the blueline that eluded the goalie on the high side. Assists on the goal were by Mike Colwell and Glen Campbell who has returned to action for the first time since his injury in December. Chris Beck opened the second with a shorthanded tally from the sticks of Brian Noble and Jamie Downing. Then, Lever made it 3 - 0 (teams' 3G0th) from Noble and Armstrong. Noble ended the period with two goals, the first from Lever and Downing and the second from Chris Beck. Belleville spoiled the shutout shutout with only 38 seconds gone in the third but Beck and Noble each added another goal to finish off the scoring. Downing, Colwell and Beck figured in on these scoring plays. Although the Toros won the game, it was costly as two players were injured. Bob McArthur who had hurt his shoulder in the previous game against Trenton was hampered hampered again and only took one shift and John Romano who broke a bone in his right hand when he slid into the net. John has his hand in a cast and will be sidelined for approximately approximately six weeks. Major Bantams Eliminated in Woolwich Tourney Unfortunately for the Dutchman Toros, Friday the thirteenth lasted the entire weekend as they lost two straight games, the first 3 - 0 by Grimsby and the second 6 - 2 at the hands of Simcoe. This was the first time this year that the Toros have been shutout shutout and also the first time in two seasons that they've lost two in a row, but this unfortunately unfortunately is no consolation for the team. Scoring the two goals for the Toros were Scott Page and Chris Beck assisted by Glen Campbell and George Pithie on the first and Brian Noble and Bob McArthur (playing hurt) on the second. Well, the boys can chalk this one up to experience and get back to the business at hand, namely exams, where the big goal here is to study hard and do your best. Good luck. Building Supplies 2s Pee Wee Play Pickering On Young Canada Day at Darlington Sports Centre on January 7th, 1984 Durham Building Supplies Pee Wees No. 2's played Pickering. First period was scoreless and both goalies made some key saves and both teams skated exceptionally well. In the second period, Pickering scored to give them a 2-0 lead early in this period. Bowmanville's Jeff Rohr netted a nice goal, assisted by Brad Lyons. In the third period, Jim Pithie scored on a break away pass from Phillip Green and Andrew Day to tie the score. Pickering then scored a quick goal to take the lead and win 3- 2. The most valuable player, won by Nicky Dennis, no. 16, was very hard to choose as every player on the Bowmanville team played well. The Durham Building Supplies Pee Wee No. 2 team travelled to Haliburton for the first game on Friday, January 6,1984. In the first period, Bowmanville scored at 9 seconds by Jeremy Laird, assisted by Nicky Dennis and Brad Lyons. Haliburton scored one minute later to tie the score at 1-1. The Bowmanville boys appeared to slow down and Haliburton scored to end the first period at 2-1. The second period went scoreless until almost (lie end when Haliburton/scored too quick goals to make it 4-1, The third period gave Jeremy Laird his second goal of the game, assisted by Phillip Green and the game ended 4-2. Ian Knight, who has been working hard, won the Most Valuable Player for Bowmanville. Thanks to Orville Hindcmnn for transporting some of our boys. Bowmanville vs Oshawa Bruins Toros 2 vs Bruins I The second game of this lourmnanet involved exciting plays and good goaltending by both teams. The Bruins had a two goal lead at the end of the first period but the Toros had an equal share of the play and they just could not find an opening in the Bruin defence, The second period ended with the score 2-1, Michael Colbourne, who played an excellent game, set up the first goal. He trapped the puck as the Bruins tried to clear it over the blue line and fired a shot which Jeremy Laird deflected into the goal. Nicky Dennis scored the second goal, an unassisted effort, early in the third period to tie the score. The highlight of this period was to see the way the Toros killed off a two man advantage, the low point was giving up a goal on a power play to let the Bruins go ahead. A tough loss for the boys which meant they were eliminated from further play. Toros 7 Newcastle 4 This game gave the Toros a chance to have some fun and change positions. Brad Lyons played goal and Cecil Stephenson scored his first goal of the year whilst playing centre. The game was marred by penalties but the boys had some good plays and passed the puck around. Jeff Acheson played well defensively as did Ian Knight while Robert Romano showed he can skate fast without his pads on.
