The first period was scoreless scoreless with both teams having many scoring chances but were thwarted by excellent goaltending at either end. Lindsay came to life in the second period, scoring twice before Matthew Doughty scored from behind the net bouncing a shot in off the Lindsay goalie with assists going to Martin d' Entremont and Jeff Flintoff. Matthew scored his second of the game minutes later picking up a loose puck deep in the Lindsay end and firing it into the net with Jeff Flintoff and Ronnie Luxton assisting on this play to tie the score at two. In the third period, Shawn McFadyen found Ryan Putnam Putnam with a perfect pass and Ryan made no mistake as he beat the Lindsay goalie with a smoker to put the Toros ahead 3-2. Lindsay tied the game a minute later, but Matthew Doughty scored his 3rd goal of the game as he took a relay from Kevin Roberts and blasted a bullet by the Lindsay cage cop to give the Toros a 4-3 lead. The visitors didn't give up and just 30 seconds later, Lindsay scored to even things up at four goals apiece. The Toros came charging- back as Shawn McFadyen put a pass onto the stick of Ryan Putnam who sped in all alone and beat the Lindsay goalie with a beauty to give the Toros a 5-4.win. Trophies were handed out for Most Valuable Player of the game won by Matthew Doughty and Most Valuable Player for each team won by Shawn McFadyen of the Toros and Jamie Golden of Lindsay. Congratulations boys! On Sunday, the Toros travelled travelled to Belleville to play their last league meeting against the Belleville squad and the Bowmanville boys came home with a well earned 4-2 win with Ryan Putnam putting on a one man show as he notched all four Toros' goals. The Toros put the pressure on Belleville right off the open- Martyn Plays Superbly in Nets As 5th Wheel Ties Stoixffville On Monday, Jan. 9th, the Bowmanville Fifth-Wheel Bantam 2's travelled to Stouff- ville for a regularly scheduled league game and came away with a point after tying Stouff- ville 1 - 1, thanks to the fine goaltending of Travis Martyn. The game was a strong skating, hard hitting affair with Bowmanville taking 12 minor penalties and Stouff- ville 10, many for roughing and high sticking. The last time these two teams met, Stouffville was allowed to skate freely and as a result defeated the Toros, 10 - 2. However, this game was different different as the Fifth-Wheel club forechecked the Stouffville team and the defencemen broke up quite a few plays by some good solid checks. The first period was scoreless, scoreless, as both teams had chances to get on the score sheet but couldn't finish off the plays or ran into some hot goaltending, particularly Bowmanville Toros' Travis Martyn. Although Bowmanville Bowmanville outshot Stouffville 8 to 5 in the first period many of the shots were long shots which Stouffville's Jim Todd turned away. In the second period, Stouffville Stouffville opened the scoring at the 12:10 . mark on a goal by Russell Kirk with assists going to Kent Smythe and Derek Hamilton. Travis Martyn who made some great stops just after the start of the period, had no chance on this one. He made the initial stop and Kirk was off to the side lo send the rebound into the net. The Bowmanville forwards created some score chances with their strong forechecking but just couldn't get it by the Stouffville goalie or missed the net on some of their shots. Near the end of the second period and part of the third, while Bowmanville played two men short, Stouffville really applied the pressure to try and add to their score, However, the penalty killing and, again, the goaltending of Martyn was equal to the task. Then at the 5:52 mark of the third period, Bowmanville's David Fairey scored on a power-play goal, assisted by Mike Houston and Paul Stainton to tic the score at one apiece. The total shots on goal were 21 for Bowmanville Bowmanville and 33 by Stouffville. Lose to Port Perry The Bowmanville Fifth- Wheel Toros were soundly defeated by the Port Perry Goreski Insulation Major Bantams in a game played in the Port. Bowmanvillc's Mike Houston Houston opened the scoring at the 9:00 minute mark of the first period with the assists going to Brent MacKay and Scott Burns. Port Perry then came back with three unanswered goals to take a 3 -1 lead going into the second period, In the second period, the Port Perry club run the score up to 7 -1 before Paul Stainton and David Fairey combined for Bowmanvillc's second goal. Stainton took a pass from Fairey, beat the defence and goaltender with some fancy moves for the goal. In the first two periods, Port Perry outshot Bowmanville 36 to 12. The third period was all Port Perry as they outshot the Toros 16 to 2 and outscored them 3 - 0 for a final score of 10 - 2. Although the score doesn't indicate it, Bowmanville stayed with the Port Perry club for about 20 minutes out of the 45 minute game, but simply couldn't slow down the quick passing club whose record to date is 40 wins and five losses. The score could have easily been much higher if it hadn't been for the goaltending goaltending of Kevin Zarosky, particularly in the third period. Blasted by Osimwa On Saturday, Jan. 14th Oshawa Blackhawks of the Little N.H.L. played an exhibition exhibition game against the Bowmanville Bowmanville Fifth-Wheel Bantam 2's and handed the Bowmanville Bowmanville squad their second consecutive consecutive defeat, this time by a score of 7 - 0. Rob Woods led the way for Oshawa with four goals and one assist and Mike Hancock posted the shut-out. The game was a chippy affair as the officials handed out a total iof 50 minutes in penalties, 26|to Oshawa and 24 to Bowmanville. Although the shots on goal were fairly even, Oshawa made thëir opportunities opportunities count taking advantage of a weakened defence by injuries injuries and sickness. Due to injuries and sickness, coach Braybrook had to juggle his lines and defence and considering considering the amount of icetime, icetime, the three regular defencemen of Troy Harness, Jeff Thompson and Scott Cole put in, all three did play a remarkable game. The boys have this week off due to school exams and their next home game is this Saturday Saturday at Darlington, tentatively at 7:30 p.m. against Sutton. Seconds later, Belleville caught the Toros napping and scored to tie the game at 1. Ryan scored his second goal halfway through the first' period assisted by Chris Brown and Jason Kiely to put the Toros ahead 2-1. In the second period Ryan bounced his third goal into the net off the leg of a Belleville defenseman, with Shawn McFadyen McFadyen assisting. Belleville narrowed the gap to 3-2 with 6 minutes gone in the third period despite the fact that the Toros had been carrying the play from the start of the period. Bowmanville's Bowmanville's determination finally paid off when the Toros started started deep in their own end with left winger Chris Brown passing up to centreman Shawn McFadyen, who then found right winger Ryan Putnam Putnam with a perfect relay and Ryan went in to score his fourth goal of the game to put the icing on the cake. Good Team Work Boys ! On Saturday, January 14th, the Heritage House Major Atoms played in Cobourg's Annual Atom Tournament. After suffering an opening game loss at the hands of the Cobourg Atoms 5 - 0, the Toros went on to post wins over Trenton 7 - 4 and Brampton 5 - 4 to capture the consolation championship. In the first game against Cobourg, the Toros could not get untracked and quickly fell behind 4 - 0 by the end of the first period. The second period was scoreless, but the Bowmanville Bowmanville boys appeared to be getting the sleep out of their eyes as they were stoned numerous times by the ever alert Cobourg cage cop. Cobourg scored their fifth goal late in the third period to end the game 5 - 0. The second game of the day for the Toros was a matchup with our old nemesis, Trenton. This was a seesaw battle from the opening face-off until the end of the second period before Bowmanville finally managed to take a three goal lead. Matthew Doughty opened the scoring from Corey Chambers at the 4:42 mark of the first period. Forty-one seconds later, Trenton scored and then Matthew Doughty popped his second goal, assisted assisted by Shawn McFadyen to end the first period Bowmanville Bowmanville 2 - Trenton 1. Early in the second period, Trenton tied the count at two. Bowmanville came right back when Geoff Goode set up Matthew Doughty for his third goal of the game. Congratulations Congratulations Matthew. Trenton scored again to even things up before the Toros finally put two goals in back to back. The first was scored by Chris Brown from Corey Chambers and then Chris Brown set up Ryan Putnam to give the Toros a 5 - 3 lead. Trenton scored just 23 seconds later to narrow the gap 5 - 4. In the third period, Shawn McFadyen from Matthew Doughty and Greg White scored and then Ryan Putnam bulged the twine, unassisted, to give the Mighty Bulls the 7 - 4 victory. An excellent game boys! The Christmas Break saw the McGregor Hardware. Minor Bantam Toros travel to Acton for tournament play. On Dec. 27 the boys faced South London. In the first period, London set the pace, scoring first. Bowmanville answered on a goal by Guy Freeman from Mark Tripp and Craig de Blois. London found the mark once more before the end of the period. London moved out 4 -1 early in the second frame before the Toros put three on the board, the first Eric Janssens from Paul Boyle and Chris Hall, the second Boyle from 0. J. Sidor and Brad Carnegie and the third, Craig de Blois from Freeman and Carnegie. The third period reverted back to form as London moved ahead once more on two goals before Carnegie finished the. scoring to end the game 6 - 5 South London. The second day of the tournament tournament matched Bowmanville Bowmanville with Brampton. Again the outcome was to be tight but in Brampton's favor 5 - 4. The boys looked sluggish after a long drive through heavy snow and at the end of one were down 2 -1 Brampton. Scoring for Bowmanville was Eric Janssens from Bob Real and Jeff Laird. The second period saw the two teams exchange goals. The McGregor goal coming from Brad Carnegie from Craig de Blois. The third saw the teams again split the scoring. First Bowmanville's Arron Ulrich from Paul Boyle and Brett Cole, then Brampton then Bowmanville again O. J. Sidor from Boyle and Mike Kane and finally Brampton. The extra goal in the first proved our boys undoing. It should be mentioned that Captain Mark Tripp had been sidelined on the first day with a broken collar bone. As a warm up for Young Canada Day, the boys travelled travelled to Orono Jan 5 to face the Oshawa LNHL Red Wings. The end result of this trip was another loss, this time 2 -1. Oshawa struck early in the first period added a score before the end of the period and just hung on from that point on. The one Bowmanville Bowmanville score came on a slapshot by Paul Boyle from the point fed by O. J. Sidor. Sat., Jan. 7 was Young Canada Day in Bowmanville. The McGregor Bantams faced Acton and wound up on the short side of a 7 - 3 score. The first period saw glimmers glimmers of hope as Bowmanville stepped out 2 - 1 on goals by Brad Carnegie from Rob Real and Jeff Laird and Paul Boyle from O. J. Sidor before Acton sputtered to life. In the second period, Acton found the mark with great regularity as they extended the lead to 6 - 3 at the end of two. The lone goal for Bowmanville Bowmanville was scored by Carnegie unassisted. The third period saw one more goal slide by the sagging Toros to end the game 7 - 3.
