i I YELVERTON NEWS "Aloha" Home again, home again from a foreign shore and much as we are a "homebody" "homebody" we shuddered at our cold reception received as Ontario experienced a record cold spell for this time of year. Those bones, those dry bones with its flimsy covering of surplus fat really felt the change in temperature from Thursday noon's 85 - 90 degree F weather at Wakiki Beach in Honolulu to Malton's (pardon me) the Lester Pearson Air Terminals -20 degrees Friday morning at 7 a.m. It has been our pleasure to be subjected to all that nasty heat for the past 2 weeks - terrifying experience of course. When we weren't parking our carcasses on the Wakiki Beach - where choice space was at a premium as bodies of every shade of colour and extremes of conformity vied for location on its shores, we managed a few alternative trips, etc. and inpection of the usual tourist traps. Highlights of our holiday was a flight over to the Island of Kauai and a days' tour if the Island with a rented car. Of special interest to us and trivial interest to anyone else possibly, was seeing first hand the beach-location where "Blue Hawaii", South Pacific and several other movies and T.V. shows were filmed. Tom Selleck, well known to views of Magnum, makes many of his shows in this area. Also back on Oahu Island (pronounced something like "O-Wahoo") we visited the Polynesian Cultural Centre, toured the island and of special interest to us, a boat trip through Pearl Harbour. We found this boat trip around Ford Island particularly fascinating, where so many U.S. ships of various sizes met their doom on Dec. 7, 1941. The Arizona still remains on the bottom there with only portions of its tunnels etc. jutting out of the water. This is now a Memorial Centre for the 3118 U.S. navy, army and civilian people who lost their lives on that unhappy occasion with around 1100 of them from the Arizona itself. The bodies of many who For Your SPECIAL VALENTINE You supply the wine, we'll supply the glasses and flowers for a truly special Valentine Gift. ADVANCE ORDERS ONLY CALL NOW! Bev's Floral Creations 162 King st. E. - Bowmanviiie Telephone 623-3377 died are still submerged in the ship's body and serves as a Memorial to them. The location of many of the other boats sunk is marked with buoys indicating their names. Additional trivia which was of interest to us - the Island Airport has a take-off and landing they claim of a plane every 3 minutes. The tourists come from everywhere imaginable; Japan forms 17 per cent or more of the tourist trade. Canadians are there by the hundreds if not thousands from one end of the country to the other - the most from B.C. and Alberta and Ontario. Other things of interest - an Elvis Presley museum with one of his Mercedes Bens autos sitting out in front. We saw A1 Harrington of Hawaii 5-0 but missed Don Ho and his tiny bubbles. Apparently although now past his prime, he was reported to have had 7 or 8 wives and to have 18 known children running around - a busy little beaver if these rumours were true. Wakiki Beach is very commercialized with hundreds of high-rise hotels, apartments and condominiums vying for the tourist "dollar". Night life continues almost all night with tourists wandering around the streets at 3 and 4 a.m. in droves. There appared as if by magic an overabundance of "hookers" on the streets, from 11 p.m. on. Sorry, but I can't quote you their prices. Surprised to see 3 other couples from Lindsay area on our plane load of 440 tourists going down - the Morgan Bakers, the Garnet Powells and Everett, Camerons of Goby. Additional frfvïa - Gasoline in Hawaii sells for 33 - 39 cents a litre - not gallons; pineapples which are grown there acre after acre, are nearly as expensive there as here. Chairman Thinks It's Time For New Headquarters to Consolidate Region Offices The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanviiie, January 25,1984 15 Durham's regional chairman has suggested that it's time for Durham to consider developing a new headquarters headquarters which will bring all administrative administrative staff under one roof. Gary Herrema proposed a new regional regional headquarters during a meeting meeting of regional council last Wednesday, Wednesday, January 18. He noted that regional departments departments are currently spread among several locations in separate buildings buildings in Whitby and Oshawa. "After 10 years, I think it's time we assimilated everyone under one roof," the regional chairman said. He pointed out that under the current current system, there are inefficiencies inefficiencies and he added that senior staff must spend much of their time on the road, between offices. He added that some negotiations have been held in order to explore the possibility of selling the regional regional headquarters building in Whitby to the provincial government. government. At the moment, the main headquarters headquarters on Rossland Rd. contains provincial court facilities as well as regional council chambers and some administrative offices. News that the Durham Region has been negotiating with the Province Province of Ontario over the possible sale of the headquarters building came as a surprise to some members members of council. Councillor Bruce McArthur, of Oshawa, stated that the question of a regional headquarters headquarters must go through proper discussion by elected officials. "I think it is imperative that this council council has its say," he said. Councillor Alan McPhail, vice- chairman of the Durham Region's management committee, assured regional council that no decision has been made to sell the old regional regional headquarters or develop a new centre for regional government. government. He added that the regional management management committee has not yet discussed discussed the matter and he estimated that Durham has another four years to decide the future of its headquarters headquarters building. The need for a new headquarters was only one item touched by the regional chairman in an address to members of the council during the first session of 1984. Mr. Herrema also pointed out achievements and objectives of each department in the Durham Region. The disposal of regional garbage will be a major issue to be resolved over the upcoming three years, Mr. Herrema said. In noting that Durban is completing completing its first decade, Mr. Herrema added that he is looking forward to a very productive decade ahead. Sunday morning, January 22nd, was a delight for outdoor people, and especially those who love fluffy newfallen snow. It was coming down thick and fast to cover everything with a beautiful cloak of white to disguise the ugliest spots of the landscape. It was not as cold as the previous days so roads were slippery and on the way to church, one poor fellow was seen trying-to shovel himself back on 401 after a skid. Church service at Welcome United was opened by elder Lloyd Kellogg until the arrival of Rev. Gordon Rutherford and Miss Jean Bridgman from the Garden Hill service. Miss Bridgman has been a missionary in India for many years and spoke to the little children of her work with children there. She had four dolls in native costume to show how they dressed. Communion service followed the opening and the Rev. Rutherford was assisted by elders Mary Kellogg and Messrs. Chris Beatty, Clarence Nichols, Tom Wilson, George Tufford and Lloyd Kellogg. The choir's anthem was, "I believe in God the Father". The regular offering was received by George Tufford and Clarence Nichols and the special offering for the Benevolent fund was received during the concluding hymn. The teachers and children of the Sunday School came back upstairs to hear Miss Bridgman tell of her work for R&ftftX Rfrftdtt RK44KK R VM\* WMM R64V1NX \WMU R&*VIN< R&'/MK R&MX Rfr*V1KK C/m/dr mm . It is a requirement of Christianity that its good news be shared with all the world and that sharing has gone on ever since the time of Paul. With modern communication it seems that there must be some Christians in every country, even Tibet, even if its a small minority, in India 2M-j per cent and in Japan, 1 )>er cent. The big change ofl modern times is that churches in. other lands are under the control of native people, not foreign missions. Missionaries are only sent from Canada on request, but they are still requested. Her information was welcome to increase our knowledge of conditions there. The annual congregational meeting was held at Welcome church on Wednesday evening, Jan 18th. Reports from all organizations showed a healthy financial situation with all commitments met. Miss Bridgman was also guest speaker at a pot luck supper held at Canton on Friday night for the whole of Hope charge of the United church. Mr. and Mrs. Brian Edey, their three boys and daughter Caroline visited with Mr. and Mrs. A. Thorndyke on Sunday and enjoyed some sleigh riding. Orono Armoury Needs Furnace Worth *3,800 It will take a total of $3,800 to complete repairs repairs to a heating system system which mal functioned at the Orono Armouries. Newcastle council agreed Monday night to spend this amount, which includes a new furnace, new booster pump, and the cleanup of the building. The Town of Newcastle Newcastle is the owner of the Armouries, which previously previously housed the Orono Hydro Electric Commission. Treasurer Kathryn Campbell noted in a report report to council that since the town has tenants tenants in the building, the work should proceed as soon as possible. The treasurer noted that the cost is below the deductible limit on town insurance and she added that the cost will be funded out of a reserve reserve account for self- insured losses.
