S/ The Oshawa Ski Club was a busy spot on the weekend with excellent conditions reported over the entire Kirby ski area. Two local skiers to take advantage of the great conditions were Ryan Brown and James Westgarth. The ski conditions were super, but it was a little cold for some skiers. Meeting On Wednesday afternoon, Council Briefs Newcastle's works department department staff have been asked to investigate a complaint complaint concerning the condition condition of a sidewalk in front of the Community Care offices offices on Temperance St., in Bowmanville. In a letter to town council on Monday, the Community Care board of directors pointed out that the asphalt portion of the sidewlk has numerous bumps and depressions depressions in which water collects and freezes. This is hazardous to both the senior citizens using the Community Care drop-in centre and to the general public, members of council were told. "We feel that this sidewalk could be greatly improved by making it a standard cement sidewalk," said the Board of Directors in their letter to the municipality. Council accepted a resolution resolution which calls for the public works department to investigate the complaint and report back. The town's chief librarian has praised Newcastle council for improvements made to the heating system at the Bowmanville Library. Library. President Ruth Andrews opened the meeting. Mrs. Edna Dobson gave the devotional devotional followed by everyone repeating the Lord's Prayer. Ruth then turned the meeting meeting over to the new president Mrs. Janet Lynn. The roll call was taken and everyone joined the U.C.W. for another year. The secretary's secretary's report was given by Mrs. Gloria Todd and the financial statement was read by the treasurer Mrs. Margaret Todd. Janet Lynn reported that all the money was turned in from the cheese sale and thanked everyone for their help in doing so well. Several thank you notes for Christmas gifts were read by Mrs. Mary-Lou Fonk. 'Happy Birthday' was sung to Margaret Todd and Ellen Farrow for their January birthdays. In March, there will be a U.C.W. presbyterial meeting. At our bazaar to be held on Saturday afternoon May 5th, it was decided to have a plant table, a craft table, some tables for the children such as touch and take, bake table and white elephant table. On Sunday, May 6th, the U.C.W. anniversary services will be held at Shiloh United with the guest speaker Mrs. Alice Sheffield of Oshawa. Isabelle Trim showed us the quilt top which she has put together. A picture of the church will be drawn in the centre and then embroidered. We have been donated a crocheted bedspread and pillow shams, all hand-done by Mary Traicus. These will be displayed at the bazaar. A grocery hamper is to be made up with every member bringing bringing an item to the April meeting.
