14 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, February 1,1984 Will Celebrate Her Second Birthday Strap will Stay in School Ken Hockin Installed as Real Estate Director Northumberland and Newcastle school trustees agreed last week to keep corporal punishment in the school system. But punishment by the strap is to be given only as a last resort and only when both the parent and principal principal agree it will be beneficial to the student. Director of Education Doug Sif- ton said during a meeting of the board in Cobourg last week that the strap is seldom used in Northumberland Northumberland and Newcastle schools. "There has been a substantial decline decline in the use of corporal punishment," punishment," he said. He added that a school's tendency tendency to use this form of discipline generally depends on views in the surrounding community. Previously, school board policy allowed corporal punishment when it was deemed to be necessary by the school principal. A new policy on discipline adopted by trustees last week states: "Corporal punishment, which can have a detrimental effect on young persons, should be used only as a last resort. However, cor poral punishment may be carried out if the principal and the parents agree that it is in the best interest of the child." Trustee Bob Willsher said he could not agree with this portion of the board's discipline policy. "I think, as adults, we have the ability to modify behavior in more appropriate appropriate fashions," he said. This form of punisment should not be used on a child in any circumstances, circumstances, he said. Russ Walker, chairman of the committee which drafted the new report on school discipline, stated that by involving the parent in the issue, the board is relieved of much of the responsibility. "Seeing that the parent is involved, involved, I'm prepared to support this, even though I do not personally personally believe in corporal punishment," punishment," said Mr. Walker. The last word on the subject went to trustee Syd Worden who said: "I don't think there's anybody around this table that got the strap more than I did and I'm still in favor of it." "It's worked wonders with you," replied School Board Chairman Dr. Ian Wilson. UCW Holds First '84 Meeting This young lady is Barbara "Kymm" Cochrane.
