j i i Marigold Motors Defeats King Garden Oldtimers By Bob Sheridan On Friday night, Grant Wright played superbly in the Bowmanville net but could not completely sustain the tenacious tenacious assaults of the men from Whitby. Whitby opened the scoring early in the first period and held the lead until the ten minute mark when Hugh German scored from behind the goal with assists to Bob Sheridan and Ron Rushak. Bowmanville then went ahead when George Sainsbury fired a pass to Bruce Meadows who was cutting between the defencemen. Bruce, fortunately fortunately missed the pass which then slid lazily into the Whitby net, past the handcuffed goal- tender. Ron Rushak then scored on passes from Gerry Henderson and Jim Olinski with a bullet drive that caught the upper right hand corner. Bowmanville's final goal was scored on an accurate shot by Irv Gill with assists to David Green and Ron Clemens. Come and see our next game Friday night at 8:00 p.m. with the Markham Fernandes. The game itself was a typical playoff game featuring some hard-hitting, solid goaltending goaltending and a lot of intimidation intimidation tactics by both teams, the latter of which and a disallowed disallowed goal by Bowmanville seemed to do the Toros in. Although the first period was scoreless, both teams had ample scoring chances but some solid goaltending by Pickering's Shawn Parker and Bowmanville's Kevin Zarosky kept the teams even. In the second period, Pickering opened the scoring on a goal by Brett Mathers. Less than a minute later, Bowmanville's Paul Martin scored at 13:40 to tie the score at one apiece. Assists on the goal went to Brent MacKay and Jeff Thompson. Mike Houston gave the Toros a 2 to 1 lead at the mid-way point of the third period on a goal, assisted by Jeff Thompson and Scott Cole. Pickering then scored two goals, forty seconds apart in the latter part of the period to go ahead 3 to 2. Bowmanville's Troy Harness scored what appeared appeared to be the tying goal with eight second left in the game. However, the referee, with a rather late whistle, disallowed the goal. The game ended 3 to 2 Pickering. It was quite; evident throughout the game that Pickering's game/plan was to take the man, fofecheck, and force the Toros to make mistakes mistakes and that was the difference difference in tonight'jS game.
