( 16 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, February 22,1984 Section Two ISew Goodyear Tire Makes an Impression Queen's Park Report By Sam Cureatz M.P.P. February 27,1984 Family Violence: The Hidden Tragedy Violence within the family has been referred referred to as a hidden tragedy. Nevertheless, awareness of the reality reality of family violence is being heightened by media attention, public conferences and through discussion in our own homes. Much is being done to bring to light the causes of family family violence and the forms that it takes. Most importantly, we are taking the first crucial steps to effecting solutions solutions to the hidden tragedy. tragedy. Family violence is a problem which is of the highest priority for the government of Ontario. Through our investigations, all of us on the Committee for Social Development have gained considerable considerable insight into the complexity of the issues of family violence in Ontario. What is certainly clear is that nothing less than an integrated and comprehensive approach approach will have an impact. impact. We must not only respond to the needs of current victims, but develop develop means to break the patterns which lead to the repetition of family family violence in future generations. The problem, problem, therefore, demands demands action on a range of fronts. Rubber Industry's Future Depends on Several Factors Says Goodyear (Can.) Head The footprint of Goodyear's newest all-season radial, Vector, shows the tire's unique crisscross tread pattern that not only improves traction in snow, wet and dry road conditions, but also extends tread life. Manufactured at Goodyear Canada's tire plants in Toronto and Valleyfield, Quebec, Vector has been selected as original equipment on a range of 1984 vehicles from all four North American automakers. Toronto plant lab technician, Ralph McNeil, examines Vector's footprint to determine what the gross contact area is of the tire while under load. The first all-season radial auto tire to be used by all four North American automakers was released to the Canadian replacement market recently by Goodyear. The tire, 'Vector,' has been used on new cars since the start-up of the 1984 model year in early fall. Recently, Goodyear Canada announced to the public the availability of 21 sizes and types of its third generation all-season ti^e. Goodyear launched the first all-season tire with the Tiempto in 1978. Four years ago it introduced the Arriva, a longer-wearing tire. With the Vector, Goodyear said potential tread life has been extended by up to 25 per cent beyond Arriva, and traction has been increased further. "The exact mileage motorists attain will depend on their driving and maintenance habits, but 100,000-plus kilometres is an attainable goal," said Cliff Johnson, president of Goodyear Canada. Compared with Arriva, the new quiet-running Vector shows an 8 per cent improvement in snow traction and is 4 per cent better on wet and dry surfaces, Johnson said. This improvement means that in snow a car normally requiring 36 metres (120 feet) to skid to a halt could stop about 3 metres (10 feet) sooner - the length of a car. Much of the added traction is attributable to the distinctive-looking, computer- designed tread with deep grooves that open to the sidewall. This design channels water, mud and/or snow out away from the tire, making the tire more resistant to hydroplaning, the condition where water remains between the tread and the road surface. In the area of fuel economy, the decreased rolling resistance of the Vector results in a 2 to 9 per cent improvement in gas mileage when compared with bias, bias-belted and many other radiais. "In the longer term the' Vector may become most famous as the world's first tire combining North American ride with European handling," Johnson said. The Vector will be priced about 10 per cent more than the Arriva, but on a potential cost-per-mile basis, the new entry can be less costly than its predecessor, Johnson said. The Vector will be available in 80,75 and 70-series profiles. The future success of Canada's rubber industry will depend largely on the industry's industry's ability to attract continuing continuing investment, Cliff Johnson, Chairman of The Rubber Association of Canada and President of Goodyear Canada Inc., told the RAC annual meeting February 10 in Toronto. He stressed that the overall investment picture for Canada was generally positive, but that obstacles such as low productivity, uncertain labor relations and insufficient government support for research research and development have hindered the flow of capital into Canada. Said Johnson: "The global competition of the '80s is not just among companies; it is among nations. It is not just for market share, but also for investment - the life blood of industrial and economic growth." He added that a positive industry - government relationship relationship was an important factor in the industry's investment investment prospects and called on rubber industry leaders to actively pursue the goal of an improved relationship and dialogue. He said the time for this initiative was right because there is growing public recognition recognition of the importance of improved productivity; for government encouragement of business and industry; and improved labor relations. "Many people finally realize that job stability for individuals individuals and national ! economic growth can only come from competitive, profitable economic operations in an integrated integrated world economy," he said. FARM BRIEFS Canadian Winter Vegetables Thanks largely to Agriculture Canada researchers, the root cellars of early settlers have been transformed into sophisticated sophisticated storage facilities. Today, Canadian apples, carrots, potatoes, rutabagas and cabbages, harvested in September, still have their fresh-picked nutritive value and taste the following May. Since 1973, under the fedeal department's Fruit and Vegetable Vegetable Storage Construction Financial Financial Assistance Program, producer groups have received nearly $20 million to help them build new and better storages. me< cfluie f umituro & A ALL IN-STORE STOCK FOR IMMEDIATE DELIVERY Virus-tested Grapevines Agriculture Canada scientists scientists believe enough domestic, disease-free nursery stock will be available soon to growers, allowing Canada to close the door on imported grapevines and fruit trees. According to Agriculture Canada researchers, trade in nursery stock and fruit has spread viruses around the world. However, federal scientists have developed strains of grapevines that are free of damaging viruses. With the help of the nursery industry, they expect to have enough virus-tested stock soon to meet the needs of Canadian growers without importing any vine stock. u-i-»»' 1 PRICED TO SELL ALL STOCK APPLIANCES 10% Over OUR COST! Tracking Down Black Flies Scientists at Agriculture Canada's Lethbridge, Alta., Research Station are out to get blackflies. Blackflies in western Canada are a major livestock pest and cost farmers money. The scientists now are testing the effectiveness of different traps for collecting adult flies. The goal is to develop a model that predicts when insecticide applications designed to control black flies would be most effective. EXAMPLE: 17 Cu. Ft. High tech robotics is another another important factor in the rubber industry's future prosperity, prosperity, he said, noting that the impact of robotics was just beginning to be felt in Canada. Citing new and improved products, greater efficiency and "an unprecedented opportunity opportunity in export markets", as benefits of new technology, he said: "The future health of our industry will depend on this important area." Looking at the past year he said that 1983 had witnessed a slow, but steady recovery from the very poor performance performance levels of 1982. The decline and stabilization of interest rates; a general rise in consumer confidence and the overall recovery of the auto industry have combined to create a generally favorable favorable business environment for the industry in the foreseeable future. The Social Development Development Committee has submitted the report setting out its findings on family violence to Ontario's government. The Committee has detailed detailed its recommendations recommendations as to how we may improve our existing legal and support systems so that wife battering may be dealt with effectively. In response to the Committee's report on wife battering, a series of initiatives has been brought into effect which will assist and support the victims of family violence. A special research fund has been established to further examine the causes of family violence violence and the measures to prevent it. The Solicitor Solicitor General and the Attorney General are expanding and reinforcing reinforcing legal procedures in the area. Ontario's government has committed $4 million million to improve funding for emergency shelters for battered women. 40 emergency shelters are funded in partnership partnership with municipalities and twelve family resources resources centers are being developed in small communities in northern Ontario. The Ministry of Community and Social Services will provide 100 percent of the capital funding to establish these homes. The government has also appointed a provincial provincial co-ordinator, Ms Jill Logan, to work with the Women's Directorate and other ministries to develop an integrated family violence prevention program. program. While government initiatives are significant, significant, they are only part of the response to a problem problem which has social, economic, legal and educational aspects. The effort to reach a constructive solution to wife-battering must be a shared societal responsibility. responsibility. At stake in the hidden tragedy is the integrity and stability of our families. The Committee for Social Development has recently embarked upon a series of hearings hearings on a draft of the Child and Family Services Services Act. The government government response to our report on child abuse is currently under study, I hope that equally positive positive action will result. : Good luck to the Eagles baseball team on their upcoming trip to Florida.
