Mildred Fortune of Blackstock and Chris Versavel of Utica recently recently spent four days at a student leadership camp at Geneva Park, Lake Couchiching. Mildred and Chris, both teachers at L'Amoreaux Collegiate Collegiate in Scarborough took part in the Scarborough Scarborough Multicultural Intsrschool Leadership Experience or S.M.I.L.E. for short, This was the fourth year of operation for the camp. Six male and six female students who have been recommended by their teachers as potential leaders are chosen from each of five schools in Scarborough. Two are elementary schools and three are collégiales. collégiales. Two teachers from each school accompany accompany them. A core of administrators administrators and facilitators who are also teachers conduct the program. program. the four days are spent developing leadership leadership skills and generally helping the students become more self confident confident and aware of the qualities necessary for a productive and successful successful life. L'Amoreaux is a multicultural school with students from nearly sixty sixty countries. The grade nine students chosen represented twelve of these countries. Mildred and Chris found it to be a very worthwhile experience experience and look forward forward to expanding the program within their school over the next two years. At the end of the four days a very closely knit group bid some tearful goodbyes but promised to meet again at the reunion reunion to be held in May. Birthday Celebration On Saturday afternoon, afternoon, February 25, Mrs. Ella Bowers of Nestleton was honoured on her 80th birthday with a delightful celebration "hosted" by her family. The festivities were held in Blackstock Town Hall with approximately one hundred guests present to extend best wishes to Ella on this milestone in her life. Her husband George wasn't feeling the best - so couldn't attend. attend. The immediate family were all present for the special occasion. The hall was nicely decorated for the event and Ella was the recipient recipient of pots of lovely flowers, gifts, and a large number of birthday greetings. The tea tables were attractively arranged arranged and the Nestleton United Church Women - of which Ella is a valued member - served a lovely lovely assortment of sandwiches, sandwiches, sweets, coffee and tea - topped off with birthday cake made and decorated by daughter Jean Williams. Relatives and friends came from far and near for this lovely lovely family gathering - New Liskeard, Cambridge, Cambridge, Peterborough, Lindsay, Oshawa, Orono, Hampton, Prince Albert, Nestleton and Port Perry and many other points. On Friday, the Sam Cawkers went calling - first calling on Doris MacPherson and Marjorie Marjorie McCombe in Port Perry. It was good to see Doris progressing well since surgery in Oshawa Hospital - she is walking with the help of two canes - a great step forward! forward! Grahame and Neta Fish are just back from a 10 day holiday in Hawaii, which they loved - ideal weather - good exotic exotic food - everything to make their holiday enjoyable, enjoyable, Neta is sporting a beautiful tan - she could be taken for one of those Hawaiin girls - she just lacks the grass skirt and the guitar - we're awfully awfully glad she is safely back home in good old Cartwright Cartwright once again! I wonder does she have a bit of Polynesian blood in her veins?
