St. Saviours 100th Birthday In the early days, the Anglicans living in Orono and on farms along the sixth line of Clarke township met for occasional services at several places in the area: Newcastle, Walsh's schoolhouse at New- tonville, Starkville school house and the old Presbyterian Presbyterian church on the fifth line, known as "Mulligan's Church." Eventually services were held in the Sons of Temperance Hall in Orono (just south of the present day United Church Parsonage.) During these years, services were taken by Rev. Hanna from Perry town and later by Rev. A. B. Chafee, also from Perrytown. The first congregational meeting of which there is any record was held on April 21st, 1883 in the Sons of Temperance Temperance Hall with Rev. Chafee as chairman. Present were Messrs, Steward, Hallett, Morton, Watson, Jamieson, Coatham and Odell. Articles of Agreement were signed between between the board of missions and this mission. Thanks were tendered Mr. Stutt for his generous offer of a lot for a church site on the fifth line. However, it was decided that the lot was too fur from Orono and the offer was declined. The location which is now St. Saviours new Parish Hall and the former building, acted as the first church built in Orono. It was erected by the Bible Christians in 1845. By the late 1860s the congregation had outgrown the little wooden church and plans were made to build a larger one on the same site. James Eddy built the present present brick church in 1869 and it was used by the Bible Christians Christians until July 1st, 1884 when they united with three other Methodist Churches and disappeared disappeared as a separate organization. organization. Orono Anglicans decided to take advantage of this opportunity. On Nov. 14th, 1884 the price of $1500 was agreed between the Bible Christians and Anglicans and the sale of the church was completed. Trustees for the Anglicans were Robert Morton, Robert Coatham, Daniel Hall, John Steward, John Dewell and Francis Morgan. (To be continued next week).
