Mr. and Mrs. David Staples and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hanson returned home Sunday evening evening from their holiday in Antiqua, West Indies. Eleven members of the United Church Hi C group enjoyed a youth conference, held last week, (Sunday through Thursday) in Winston Churchill School, Lawrence Ave., Toronto. The young people were billeted in private homes, and report a very enjoyable time. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Bailey and boys spent the past weekend weekend in Toronto visiting friends. About 40 young people, members of Orono Skating Club and chaperones, are currently enjoying several days in Ottawa. Mrs. Lynn Kimmett and family were Thursday visitors with her mother, Mrs. Dorothy Bailey and aunt, Mrs. E. Billings. Weekend visitors with the 0. Durham Complex Party A somewhat smaller than usual crowd at the monthly dinner, held at the hall, on Thursday, March 15. Fifty- three persons sat down to a real "Irish" dinner! Juice, rolls, Irish stew, cake and ice cream were enjoyed by all and the hall was suitably decorated decorated with green shamrocks. Special entertainment for the evening was supplied by Bonnie Cowle, Ruth Cowle on accordian, Jean Lepine, Hampton, on piano and little Miss Angie Paeden, Lindsay, granddaughter of Bonnie. Singing in harmony, several dance numbers (such as the bird dance), musical numbers and a very enjoyable sing- along were much enjoyed. Orono United Church News Orono United Church welcomed welcomed Rev. Bill Piercey who recently retired, from South- minster United in Oshawa. Rev. Wright was on study leave all last week and will be home on call this week. (983-5502). Rev. Piercey gave the children's story and the choir rendered the always beautiful anthem "Today." A nice change of pace when the choir came down to the front of the church, as our organist is on holiday, and David presided at the piano. The guest speaker chose as his topic "Love Demands More," and illustrated there are many times that the written written law does not always coincide coincide with the law of love. At the recent Board of Stewards meeting it was decided to sponsor a Smorgasbord Smorgasbord Dinner, on Wed., May 16, in the main hall, and all proceeds proceeds to go to church renovation renovation fund. The Friendship room was painted last week by volunteer helpers, and the tender for carpets is now selected by the Board of Trustees. New furniture for the Friendship Room is also in proposed planning. The newly elected pastoral Relations Committee held another meeting on Monday night, March 19. Mr. and Mrs. George Bellamy and family spent several days last week visiting his mother, Mrs. Bessie Bellamy, their son Chris stayed with his cousin Ron Cowan. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Kay Lycett (nee Pat Irwin) who were married Saturday, March 17. Mr. and Mrs. James Lowery, Kirby provided the music for the dance, held in Ballyduff hall, last Saturday night. Brooks Cowan Jr. spent several days last week visiting his uncle David Bellamy, Hastings. Our business section will be extra busy, next week as our new department store will open and work is almost complete complete on the other side of the former I.G.A. store, as Partners Plumbing and Heating will take over. We are pleased to report Mrs. Dorothy Beattie has returned returned home from hospital, but Mrs. Marjorie Collard and Mr. Vic Garrod are both patients in Bowmanville hospital. All are residents of Durham Complex. Orono Dist. Credit Union Holds 30th Annual Meeting The Urono District Credit Union Ltd. held their 30th Annual Meeting on Friday, March 2, 1984 at the Centennial Centennial Hall, Queen Street West in Bowmanville. President Bill Gilbank welcomed everyone and Clara Martin said Grace. The Rebeccas served 55 members, guests and their families a delicious roast beef dinner complete with homemade homemade pies. Director Marion Vanstone who had arranged for the dinner meeting, thanked thanked the ladies on behalf of everyone present. Head table guests were introduced by President Bill Gilbank, his wife Mary, Jim Teefey, Vice- President of the Chapter, Director Clare Martin, Mrs. Werry, our Treasurer-Manager, Treasurer-Manager, Joan Sutcliffe, Secretary. Entertainment was provided provided by Eric Lambier at the piano and he was given a great hand of applause at the conclusion of his program. This was followed by slides of a trip to Australia by Mrs. Pedwell. The slides were very colorful and Mrs. Pedwell's presentation was well written. To show our appreciation, Mrs. Dorothy Perfect presented presented her with a fresh bouquet of roses. The door prize winners were as follows: Siegfried Block won the Curvply Wood Products Products prize and his wife, Ingrid won the St. Mary's prize. Mrs. Marie Pedwell was the happy winner of the J. A. Smith jewel box and young Carla Werry won the gift certificate certificate from the Durham Farmer's Co-op. Barb Burris was the lucky winner of the, CUMIS donated prize, and the" Plydesigns table was won by Betty Roberts. Obituary KATHRYN ELIZABETH COATHAM Kathryn Elizabeth Coatham, resident of Orono and district since 1918, died in Bowmanville Memorial Hospital February 23,1984. The daughter of James and Christina Kay of Newmarket, Newmarket, Ont., she was born in Sutton in 1896 and attended attended Sutton public school, Newmarket High School and Toronto Normal School. She taught at Oak School in 1918 then moved to Antioch to teach, where she met and married Hals- ted Coatham in 1924. They farmed east of Orono until 1967 when they moved to Main St. S., Orono where she resided until her death. Predeceased by her husband husband Hoisted and two grandsons Thomas and William of Red Deer, Alberta. Alberta. Survived by four sons, Robert and Howard of Red Deer, Alberta, Edward and Thomas of Orono, fourteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. She was a lover of flowers, a member of Orono United Church and U.C.W. We would like to thank all those who collected for the Library's "Super Series" Attracts Large Crowd On Saturday afternoon at Bowmanville Memorial Library, about 75 youngsters and a few adults enjoyed entertainment provided by popular Claude X Le Brecque better known as 'Jazzbones'. On Sunday, March i8th was the second Sunday in Lent. After the hymn, "Rejoice, The Lord Is King" the children came forth for their story time with Mr. Lafave. We learned a new chorus "The King Is Coming". The teachers and children retired to the lower level for their Sunday School classes. The senior choir sang a delightful anthem under the direction of their leader and organist Mrs. Ulah Chambers. We also learned a new hymn - (Forty Days and Forty Nights). Pastor Joe's message was based on "Christ the King: Tempted." We always extend a warm welcome to all those who are worshipping with us.
