The Bowmanville Kinsmen Club was just one of close to 50 community agencies honored last week for assisting the Community Service Order program. program. Each agency provided work assignments to clients of the CSO. Here, John Peters, chairman of the CSO board of directors, makes a presentation to Ted White, of the Bowmanville Kinsmen Club. Assisting Mr. Peters is Pat Rundle, co-ordinator of the program. Under Community Service Orders, a judge may require that someone convicted of a crime contribute a specified number of hours to community work. A luncheon last Thursday at the Port Darlington Marina and Hotel was held to thank those community groups who have given assignments to individuals receiving Community Service Orders. In return for providing work assignments to offenders, agencies agencies in the town received more than 3,000 hours of assistance. Last year, the Town of Newcastle received over 3,000 hours ofvolunteerser- vice through the Community Community Service Order (CSO) program. Those extra hours of help for non-profit groups are the result of a provincial program which allows nonviolent nonviolent offenders to serve their sentence by working for the community rather than receiving some other form of punishment, such as a jail term. Community Service Orders Orders have been described as a benefit to both the community community and the offender. On Thursday, March 22, a luncheon was held at the Port Darlington Marina and Hotel to honor those nonprofit nonprofit and public agencies which have participated in the program during the past year. It is these groups which were the recipients of the more than 3,000 volunteer volunteer hours. CSO co-ordinator Pat Rundle explained that clients have performed a variety of tasks for schools, churches, athletic organizations, organizations, community centres, and many other agencies which are either non-profit or tax supported. Close to 50 agencies received received certificates of appreciation appreciation for their support to the CSO program. Mrs. Rundle said that the program began in the Town of Newcastle in 1982 with 24 clients. Today, the caseload is between 35 and 40. A total of 74 clients were involved in this program during 1983. They contributed a total of 3,286.5 hours of volunteer service to the community. Two purposes of the program program are best expressed on the appreciation certificates certificates given to community groups last week. Sunday School for all ages Nursery Care for pre-school children every Sunday Dear Mr. James, I am writing a letter of appeal to the public. I am the wife of a merchant in town so wish to remain anonymous. My problem is our driveway entranceway is always being blocked by people of this good town. Generally, at the business we are in a hurry to get in and out and have to wait till whoever owns the car comes back. If we're supposed to be back from lunch on time, we can't wait for the vehicle to be moved, so have to go and park elswehere and pay to do so as we are unable to use our own parking lot. Sometimes, we do find the driver and when we ask them to move, they get angry at us. The town provides two large parking lots plus free parking Friday nights and Saturdays and I feel there is no excuse for using our driveway as a parking spot. BAHA'I FAITH It Is easy to read the Holy Scriptures, but it Is only with a clean heart and a pure mind that one may understand their meaning. P.O. We work evenings quite often to get caught up and are also there Sundays. Besides, the tenant who lives above the business also has a vehicle and has difficulty getting in and out. If you are parking in our driveway and are in to do business with us, then please park to one side so we can get by your vehicle. What I guess I'm asking is to be considerate of people. Thanks for listening and try to think of how you'd feel if you went to go out now and couldn't because there was a car blocking your own driveway and you knew you had no visitors.
