Annual Atom Tournament. First game opponents were the Red Wings of the Little N.H.L. who fought back from a 3 - 1 deficit to defeat the Toros 5 - 4 by scoring their last goal with just five seconds remaining in the game to pick up the win. The Toros started strongly when Chris Brown bulged the twine after only eighteen seconds of play, assisted by Matthew Doughty and Ron Luxton. The Wings tied the score three minutes later but Kevin Roberts put the Toros ahead 2 -1 when he tipped in a relay from Matthew Doughty and Chris Brown. Shawn McFadyen's blast caught the corner to put the Toros in front 3 - 1 at the 3:41 of the first period, assisted by Martin d'Entremont and Ryan Putnam. The second period was scoreless with both teams having good chances but unable unable to capitalize. In the third period, the momentum turned in the Red Wings' favour as they out- scored the Toros 4-1. Shawn McFadyen scored his second of the game, assisted by Martin d'Entremont and Ryan Putnam halfway through the period. Unfortunately it was all the offense that the Bowmanville Bowmanville Boys could muster. This loss put the Toros in the consolation side of the tourney and their next opponent was the Hawks of the Little N.H.L. In game two, the Toros started started off in the same fashion as they had in game one by scoring early in the first period. Shawn McFadyen was the marksman, this time with assists going to Matthew Doughty and Greg White. Exactly one minute later the Hawks scored a powerplay goal to tie the game at one apiece. The tie was shortlived, however as Geoffe Goode fired two goals within 48 seconds to put the Toros up 3 -1. The first goal was set-up by Matthew and Shawn while Geoff's second goal was unassisted. Ryan Putnam's unassisted bullet rounded out the scoring in the first period and gave Bowmanville a 4 -1 lead. The Hawks scored once more to narrow the gap 4-2, but Jeff Flintoff's blast from the point deflected into the goal off of an Oshawa skate by Kevin Roberts to give Bowmanville Bowmanville the 5 - 2 win. In the consolation final, Bowmanville came up against a team from Richmond Hill and the Toros skated away with an impressive 7 - 3 triumph. Jason Kiely put the Toros on the scoreboard midway midway through the first period, tipping in a passout from Shawn McFadyen and Matthew Doughty. Matthew scored the second Toro goal and his fiftieth of the year when right off the faceoff deep in Richmond Hill's end, Matthew got the draw and flipped the puck into the top corner unassisted. Congratulations Matt! Two minutes later Chris Brown fired his thirty-third of the year, assisted by Jason Kiely to give the Toros a 3 - 0 lead. Richmond Hill scored early in the second, but the Toros A request for financial assistance of $130,000.00 to the Federal Government by Ted Samuel, president of Ply- designs, Orono, has been denied. The application was made to develop a new product product known as knockdown furniture. This new concept of furniture has become very popular in Europe. Tyrone UCW to Receive Quilting Instruction came charging back and Ryan Putnam notched his thirty- first of the year to put Bowmanville Bowmanville ahead 4 -1. In the third period, Matthew scored his second of the game, assisted by Shawn McFadyen and Kent Vanderheyden to up Bowmanville's lead to 5 - 1, but 46 seconds later Richmond Hill scored to narrow the gap 5 -2. Shawn McFadyen restored the Toros' four goal lead two minutes later when he slammed slammed his twentieth of the year past the Richmond Hill cage cop, assisted by Geoff Goode and Matthew Doughty. Matthew rounded out the Toro scoring when he notched his third of the game, to pick up the hat-trick, assisted by Jason Kiely. With less than one minute to play in the game, Richmond Hill scored and the game ended with the final score Bowmanville 7, Richmond Hill 3. The Heritage House Major Atoms had pretty good luck in tournament play this year. Out of the six tournaments' that they participated in, the Toros won the consolation three times, were in the championship championship finals once and finished out of the medal round twice. Nice going boys! With the conclusion of the Little N.H.L. Tournament, the season for the Major Atoms also ended. The team consisted consisted of Geoff Smith, Jason Hiscock, Jason Kiely, Ronnie Luxton, Geoff Goode, Greg White, Chris Brown, Martin d'Entremont, Ryan Putnam, Kevin Roberts, Shawn McFadyen, Kent Vanderheyden, Vanderheyden, Matthew Doughty, Corey Chambers and Jeff Flintoff. This is a great group of 10 year old boys, for whom I have a great deal of admiration for hanging in until the very end and never quitting. They are the direct result of a super group of parents who were very supportive and a pleasure pleasure to deal with. At this time I would like to thank Grant Flintoff, Ted White and A1 Kiely who did a terrific job and through their efforts made this a rewarding and successful season. Many thanks to our contact mother and statistician Joanne Brown for a job well done! Also to the hockey mothers Lynda, Jan, Joan, Barb, Terri, Joanne, Debbie and Sue who are now planning the boys banquet. A great deal of thanks to The Canadian Statesman for publishing our writeups and to our sponsor Heritage House Restaurant for their generosity generosity and support, to the Town of Newcastle Council for the donation of the Town of Newcastle Newcastle pins that were greatly appreciated and traded at the Niagara Falls Tournament. Use the Sun's Heat Open the drapes in south facing windows during sunny days and let the sun shine in! At night, close the drapes to retain the indoor heat. If you have a large expanse expanse of glass which doesn't receive a lot of direct sun, keep them closed all the time. A saving of heat can be realized by not allowing it to escape through glass.
