District Director Mrs. Viola Thorndyke reported from a recent District meeting. meeting. The Annual District meeting is to be.May 19th at Bailieboro. The District is sponsoring a bus trip to the Erland Lee Homestead and also to the W.I. museum at Milton, on June 4th. The Bethany W.I. gave $50.00 donation to the newly formed Victoria County Disaster Fund, also a donation donation towards prizes for the Spelling Bee, held at the annual annual Millbrook Fair. Members were reminded next meeting in April is the annual one, and yearly fees are $3.00. Members to meet at Mrs. Addison Scott's at 11:30 a.m. and proceed to the Pentathlon Restaurant for a luncheon meeting. The roll call for the March meeting was wear your W.I. pin or pay a penalty. All the members wore their pins! Mrs. Kay Porteous read a poem on "Kindness." The theme of the program was "Citizenship" and several members took part in a skit, which described the different different levels of the Women's Institute, and their aims in the world and community. The program concluded with a musical duet, followed followed by all members singing singing "The Institute Prayer" to the tune of "Bless This House." Mrs. Frank Edwards Edwards won the lucky cup prize. Women of the community are invited to attend all W.I. meetings. For information call the secretary, Mrs. Robert Jarvest, or president president Mrs. Vincent Jackson, both of Bethany. A good opportunity opportunity to learn something something new and enjoy fellowship fellowship with other women. Due to the absence of Rev. John Lindsay, the congregation congregation of Bethany United Church was happy to have Dr. Arthur Kewley ofPeter- , borough take the service on Sunday, March 18. Dr. Kewley Kewley had been a most faithful supply minister during the early months of 1983, following following the departure of Rev. John Jones. Refreshments Refreshments were served following following the service and a happy hour was spent renewing acquaintances with Dr. Kewley. During the four remaining remaining weeks of the Lenton season season there will be an hour film shown on the Thursday night of each week, beginning beginning at 7:30. We are sorry.to learn that Mr. Harold Fca&an suffered a broken leg while bn a skiing skiing holiday in Austria. It is with regret that we report the passing of several several residents and a former resident of our area. Mrs. Margaret Reid, Toronto, passed away last week. She and her husband, "Wally" were popular proprietors of the 'corner store' in Bethany for many years. Sympathy is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Howard Rowan and family on the passing of Diana's father, Mr, Raymond McCully, Port Perry. Also to the family of Mrs. Vera Timms in the passing of a loving daughter and sister Mrs. Doris Trc- mccr and to Mrs, Bertram McGill whose husband passed away in Civic Hos- pial shortly alter being down home from Florida where he had suffered a severe severe stroke. Mr. and Mrs. McGill had bought the former home of Mrs, II. Rowan and have been summer summer residents here for a few years. Mrs. Evely Mount spent a few days in Toronto with her sister and brother-in- law, Mr, and Mrs. Cecil McGill. Mr. and Mrs. Marcus Cnl- gon and family and Mr, Hector Hector Cnlgon, Toronto, were weekend visitors with Mrs. Mary Cupel I, The Golden Stars Sr. Citizens Citizens held their regular meeting on' Wed., March 21st with the Pres. Mrs. Addison Addison Scott in the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Mrs. George Clarke. Birthdays and wedding anniversary were acknowledged. Best wishes go to the sick and shut-ins. A letter was read from Mrs. Helen Smith, one of our members holidaying in Scotland. It was decided to have the Mini Tea Room again at the Craft Show June 2nd and 3rd. Details will be discussed discussed at a later meeting. The Pres, reproted buying buying new euchre cards, also wool, using the last of the grant money. A meeting will be held with Mrs. Marless Lindsay attending at a later date. The BowlingBanquet will be held at Rock Haven May 15th, at 12:30, price $7.00, all members are invited to attend. attend. There will be quilting at Mrs. Addison Scott's Thursday, Thursday, March 29th at 9:30 a.m. Cavan are holding their ham supper on April 14th with a card party later in the hall. Mrs. Jean Jones and group were in charge of the program. Mr. John Findlay of Bowmanville from the Dept, of Agriculture was the guest speaker. Lunch was served by the group after an interesting question period. Obituaries ARTHUR ACIL GIBSON In poor health for two weeks, Arthur Acil Gibson, aged 90, passed away in Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville, Bowmanville, on Saturday, March 24 th, 1984. Son of James Edgar Gibson and Jennie Phoebe White Gibson he was born in Cramhe Township and educated at Foxboro. He was married on December 1st, 1915, to Jessie Clinnie Bell. A resident at 68 King Street East, Bowmanville, he had previously resided in the Baseline Community where he farmed, retiring 12 years ago. After selling his farm he worked as a mechanic for W. H. Brown Farm Implements. Surviving are his daughters Mrs. W. Brown, Mrs. C. Fetch, Bowmanville, Mrs. A. Bushell, Niagara Falls, Mrs. M. Marks, Georgetown, 10 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Morris Funeral Chapel, on Tuesday with the Reverend Mark Elliott officiating. Pallbearers were Messrs. Ivan Rogers, Tom Andrus, Don Foley, Ron Metcalf, Percy Cowling and Charles Fetch. Interment Ebenezer Cemetery. Cemetery. LAURIE ADELAINE MARY KURULIAK The death of Laurie Adelaine Mary Kuruliak, aged 64, occurred suddenly in Bowmanville on Wednesday, March 21st, 1984. Born at Shalford, England, and educated in England, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Caroline Smith. She was married May 23rd, 1942, to Michael Kuruliak. A resident of Bowmanville for one and a .half years, she had previously lived in Red Rock for 36 years. Mrs. Kuruliak was a member of St. Peter's Anglican Church, Red Rock, and of St. John's Anglican Church, Bowmanville. She was also a member - of Branches 226 and 178, Royal Canadian Legion and of the Girl Guides of Canada. Her hobbies included knitting and gardening in which she took an avid interest. Surviving are her husband, sons Michael Jr. of Coquitlan, B.C., William of Red Rock and daughter Caroline (Mrs. Wesley Bateman) of Bowmanville, two sisters Henrietta and Gladys of ■ England, four brothers William, David and Leslie of England and Arthur of Australia, daughters-in-law Betty and Debbie, 10 grandchildren, numerous nephews and nieces. Funeral services were held at the Morris Funeral Chapel, Bowmanville on Saturday with the Reverend Byron Yates officiating. Pallbearers were Messrs, Brian, Percy and Paul Kuruliak, David Redfcrn, Jim Wintonyk and Richard Morrison. Interment Bowmanville Cemetery.
