i The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, April 11,1984 Section Two Let's Get Growing By Harry VanBelle For the Week of April 2,1981 Blue Skies and Green Grass This would be a perfect combination, to make the spring a delight to work in. Fortunately, we cannot do anything about the weather, if we could then each person would want something different. different. Now about the lawn, we can make it green and nurture it to remain that way throughout throughout the coming season. Everybody Everybody wants a lush green lawn, and in gardening there are three topics that are discussed over and over again, lawns, roses and African violets. What is a lawn? A lawn is an area densely planted with small grass plants that are so close together that it forms a dense mat. The grass plants are. usually blue grass (several varieties) or creeping creeping red fuscue and interspersed interspersed with these grass plants we will have the weed plants, such as the dandelion, crab- grass and numerous other little plants that will grow in the lawn, often spoiling the effect of a neat lawn. Now is the time to get that lawn in shape. First, the lawn must be raked with a hard garden rake. Even if you remove remove some of the grass plants this will not hurt the lawn, in fact it will open the soil to allow the air to enter and will make the grass grow lusher. The material you rake out is called thatch, which is an accumulation of grass clippings clippings and other debris that has collected there during the winter season. Sometimes this thatch is so thick that it would be wise to rent a thatchcr, which is a machine with tiny knives that whirl around very rapidly and remove the thatch from the root zone and bring it to the top of the grass, where it can easily be removed. Some lawns have a very hard bottom bottom due to compaction by roller or heavy foot traffic. This will cause the small grass plants to grow very poorly since no air will penetrate into the soil. This can be a real problem in lawns with a clay base. To overcome this problem problem you must get air into the soil with a machine called an airator, that takes small plugs of soil out of the lawn, enabling enabling the air to get to the root zone. After the raking, if the grass seems to have lifted due to the heaving of the frost, a roller can be used to press the grass back down to the soil so that the roots will grow again. Often this rolling is done to level out the lawn, but this wil actually harm it more than do it any good since the soil becomes compacted and the grass will not grow. The Battle of the Numbers What type of fertilizer to apply to the lawn at this time of the year, a 10-6-4 a 7-7-7 a 20-4-8 a 25-5-5 a 10-10-10 a 6-3-3 and so on and so on? Basicly the lawn needs a boost, by replacing the nitrogen that has leached during the winter months. The first number is the nitrogen, the second number number the phosphorus and the third potash. All fertilizers have these ingredients in the bag. But here is where it ends. Some fertilizers have a straight granular fertilizer mixed together with grits (tiny stones) which release their plant food when it hits the soil. This is often the cheapest oné, helping the lawn get started, but will have no lasting value. The second type of fertilizer is called a slow release plant food, which will release enough plant food to get the lawn started and then will slowly release the balance to the lawn over a two month period. This type of plantfood is made in numerous formulations, formulations, some use a so called suplhur coated prills for slow release, some homogenize their products. Most of these products will give you excellent results, with the more expensive one being the best value for your money. More next week... Until next week, happy gardening. Durham East NDP Plans Forum On Monday, April 16th, the Durham East NDP Riding Association will be holding a Public Forum to gather specific specific information regarding the recent property tax increases in the Town of Newcastle. Mike Breaugh, M.P.P. Oshawa (Intergovernmental and Municipal Affairs Critic) will be on a panel with his former colleague from the Ontario Legislature, Doug Moffat. They will be documenting documenting cases from as many concerned concerned ratepayers as possible. These cases will be brought up in the Legislature in order to put pressure on the Ontario Government to remove the inequities caused by Market Value Assessment. The Forum will take place at the Flying Dutchman Hotel, Liberty Street at Hwy. No. 401, Bowmanville, at 7:00 p.m. The Forum will be followed by the Durham East NDP meet- int to select delegates and resolutions which will go to the Party's biennial Convention June 30 through July 1. At this time, there could be a resolution resolution passed addressing the taxation problems faced due to Market Value Assessment. 'Food Terminal' Only!
