Vanstone Flour & Feed Mill 116 King Street West -- Bowmanville Telephone 623-5777 EBENEZER U.C.W. On a sunny Tuesday, April 10, 1984 twenty three ladies and two children met in the C.E. Hall for our Easter U.C.W. meeting. President Mrs. Eileen Down opened with an Easter poem "God So Loved The World." Mrs. Joan Pickell read the past minutes and secretary Mrs. Kay Mackie read thank you notes, followed by Mrs. Joan Down giving the treasurer's treasurer's report. Because of their immediate need we gave another $50.00 to Destiny Manor, the home for alcoholic women in Oshawa. On Tuesday evening, April, 10th, four of our ladies attended attended and enjoyed the seminar for young women. Auberge, the home for battered battered women and children is getting ready for its May opening. We earlier donated four quilts and are now giving them $100.00 plus goods to stock their kitchen cupboards. Mrs. Margaret Down will attend the Ontario Conference For Women of the United Church of Canada on June il - 10. Registrations for Quin-Mo- Lac boys, girls or family camping are now available from Mrs. Eileen Down. Plan to attend our next meeting on May 8 when we will tour Cullen Barns. All ladies welcome. Mrs. Joan Coverly and Mrs. Lois Osborne led in an Easter devotional with the cross as their theme, We sang "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," accompanied by Aunt Louise Osborne on piano followed by prayer, Lois read a short story from the collection of tlie late Ada Pickell entitled "The Missing Cup." It told of Ixionard DaVinci's painting of the last supper and how he had painted Jesus holding a wine cup. Upon completion he asked his friend to come and see It. His friend said it's wonderful "That cup is so real I cannot keep my eyes off it," DaVInci immediately took a brush and stroked it across the cup and said "If it affects you that way it must not remain" he exclaimed. "Nothing shall distract attention from the figure of Christ." Joan read a poem "It Was For Me" and also a reading "The Voice of the Cross." We then sang "The Old Rugged Cross" followed by an Easter responsive reading. Joan and Lois then read "Beneath The Cross" telling of the last words Jesus spoke from Calvary's Hill taken from Matthew, Luke and John and each word was pinned pinned on an old wooden cross. We were favoured with a duet "Kneel at the Cross" sung by Mrs. Greta Down and Mrs. Jean Osborne accompanied accompanied by Mrs. Eileen Down. Following the duet, Joan asked each lady present to write a prayer request or concern on a slip of paper and to come forward and leave it at the foot of the wooden cross. As we stand beneath the cross of Jesus this Easter, let us realize as never before all He has done for us. Will anything anything take our eyes off Christ and the real meaning of His death on the cross and His resurrection? Tea and fellowship followed with Mrs. Jean Osborne serving serving her delicious home made hot cross buns. Our sympathy and prayers go to Brian and Lyla Ficc in the death of Brian's father, Mr. Carl Ficc and to John and Carol Muir in the passing of Carol's mother, Mrs. Alexander. Sympathy of the community is also extended to Mr. and Mrs. Keith Ormiston in the sudden loss of his brother Walter Ormiston.
