4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, April 25,1984 Section Two Courtice and BHS Marketing Students Prepare Merchants 9 Advertising This year's Adcraft program, promoted by The Canadian Statesman in co-operation with local merchants and the Marketing classes at Courtice Secondary School and Bowmanville High School is a bit different from previous years. This is the eighth year that Statesman's Advertising Manager Brian Purdy has produced this program and he has added a new twist. Merchants who are participating will fill out a form evaluating the students. They will report on the students' approach, how well they carried out the details given them for inclusion in their advertising, their general deportment and interest in the program. Some of the reports probably will make interesting The illustration in Bolahood's Sports World's advertisement appears to e meeting "■' i * ' ' ~ - - -- Simon Telï be meeting with approval from Doug Kennedy, Denny VandenHeuvel and Iky of the Courtice Secondary School's Marketing class. Teachers David Line at Bowmanville and John Barrie Courtice have co-operated fully with The Statesman and Mr. Purdy on this project. In fact, when the Editor turned photographer messed up almost a half roll of film taken of the students in action, they without hesitation set up another photo session which was deeply appreciated. Under the Adcraft program, marketing students contact merchants who have already agreed to participate. The students come up with copy ideas, designs and illustrations that will produce an advertisement that meets the approval of the merchant and falls within the guidelines of this newspaper. What it does is give students some practical experience dealing with potential customers and learning just how newspaper advertisements are produced, training may be valuable to them when they graduate and enter the business world. The key to success in the program is the co-operation received from all those involved, merchants, teachers and students. Over the past eight years, everyone in the program has been most enthusiastic and cooperative, cooperative, with merchants agreeing whole-heartedly year after year to participate. For the students, it is a new opportunity for them to try out their skills and is a welcome change from normal classroom learning. We encourage readers to check this section carefully to appreciate what these young people have accomplished in a highly specialized field. We think their efforts will amaze readers, with most of the advertisements appearing quite professional as though they had been produced by people with years of experience. Of course, one way of showing how much the advertisements have appealed would be for readers to congratulate the merchants participating and possibly buying some of the merchandise being advertised. That would indeed show the merchants that their involvement was worthwhile and the students would have achieved the desired result with the advertisements. Teresa Vos, Barb Burgess and Natalie Nowosad of Courtice Secondary's Marketing class are working hard to complete the McGregor Hardware advertisement in time to meet this week's deadline.
