6 The Canadian Statesman Rowmanville, April 25,1984 | sport-talk FLASHBACK -- 25 YEARS AGO -- It was a big night at Bowmanville Memorial Arena, Saturday, when Midget Captain Brent Hughes was presented with the trophy for winning the coveted All Ontario Championship, by O.M.H.A. District Convenor Gordon Hawes of Whitby. Bowmanville defeated Stamford three consecutive games to take the Minor Midget "A" title. FLASHBACK -- 10 YEARS AGO -- The Legion Ladies Bowling team of Branch 178 will compete in the provincial tournament to be held June 22nd at Welland. Team members are Nyhl Sheehan, captain, Bernice Partner, Grace Downey, Jean Burton, Mary Gray and Irene Whitney. THE FISHING SEASON OPENS APRIL 28th at 8 a.m. SHORE CLEAN-UP -- With the disappearing snow and ice, many property owners are looking forward to getting out and doing some spring yard maintenance. For those property owners along Lake Ontario, yard work may mean more than raking the grass and getting the garden in shape. Once again, the winter wind, wave and ice action from the lake has left its mark on various sections of the erodible shoreline. Ministry staff have completed spot checks along the shoreline this spring. Although the ice was relatively light this past winter, it has left telltale marks of erosion erosion in numerous locations. Should any property owners along Lake Ontario anticipate doing any shoreline stabilization work, we ask that they first contact the Lindsay district office. The Ministry has a wide range of information and pamphlets which may assist in planning shoreline shoreline work. Ministry staff can also advise of any approvals that may be required to place fill or structures on the bed of Lake Ontario. BADMINTON -- Congratulations to Jane Hicks of Bowmanville High School who placed first in the Senior Girls' Badminton singles at the Lake Ontario Secondary School Association Badminton championships last week. On April 7, 1984, the Oshawa and District Real Estate Board sponsored an All Ontario Real Estate Hockey Tournament for the Canadian Cancer Society and raised $2,500.00 from this event. In addition, the Real Estate Board entered its own team and swept to victory in the final game, defeating Sherban, Doug Humphrey, Neil Ryan, Ted Mendyk, Steve Bally, George VanDyk, Mark Burn- field and Bill Roka. Canadian Tire Midget Twos, closed out a mildly successful season by defeating the Trenton Select Midgets on April 5th, 9-2. "Winning feels good," says Ted Mendyk, Coach of the team and Chairman of the Tournament, "But we are most excited by the fact that we raised $2,500.00 for the Cancer Society." Ted went on to explain that part of the money is raised from a snack bar and that all food and supplies for this snack bar are contributed by local business. In all, over 35 -, i thank assistant coaches Gerry Henderson, Steve Barclay and a special thanks to manager Charlie Wheelock. Thanks to the Treen family for doing the stats and the writeups. Thanks to the boys for their co-operation. They played well during the playoffs and the four tournaments, gaining three consolation trophies. Good luck boys, it was fun. businesses contributed food and door prizes to the Real Estate Hockey Tournament. "Not everybody can put on skates and play hockey," says Ted Mendyk, "But everybody can do their part in the fight against cancer. Isn't it great that we see the kind of support from the grassroots level in our business community for this event?" Numerous ( local teams did participate in the tournament. In fact, there were two divisions in this event. The real estate division saw teams from , all.. . over Ontario ; including Cobôurg, Peterborough, Peterborough, Kitchener - Waterloo, Waterloo, Mississauga, Brantford, Oakville and Belleville competing in the tournament. The second division was com posed of local teams. The Oshawa Police, Oshawa Lawyers, Ron's Skate Care, The Metropolitan Police Force, the GM Truck Plant workers, "the Wanderers", "the Hornets" and "Gooding Cartage" joined in this division. Ultimately, the Metro Toronto Police "Blue" team won the Championship and the consolation prize was picked up by the Durham Lawyers. "This is an annual event," says Anita Witty, President of the Oshawa and District Real Estate Board. "We. certainly plan to hold the tournament for the Cancer Society again next year. "Bantam" Tournament Tournament held at the Donevan Complex in Oshawa. The Toros were a last minute replacement replacement for Port Hope. The Toros met Pickering Saturday night and came away with a 1 - 0 victory thanks to some fine goaltending goaltending by the Toros' Kevin Zarosky and a good solid effort by the rest of the Toros, in particular, Kenny Desmedt, whose goal stood up as the game winner. The game was a typical Pickering - Bowmanville encounter. Both teams played hard and fast with plenty of scoring chances on both sides. Pickering had the upper hand early in the game but the Toros defence lead by Troy Harness and back checking of the Toros forwards broke up a lot of the Pickering scoring threats. Kenny Desmedt, then gave the Toros a 1 - 0 lead and with the goal tending of Kevin Zarosky that was all they needed. The Toros' Kevin Zarosky was selected as the game M.V.P. Kenny Desmedt was also selected as an M.V.P. for his fine display of two-way hockey. On Sunday, the Toros met the Oshawa "Major Bantam" Bruins for the Consolation Cup. This game was also a fast, hard fought game by both teams. The Bruins applied pressure right from the opening opening face-off and only some fine goaltending by the Toros' Travis Martyn prevented the Bruins from having an early lead. The Bruins opened the scoring, however, Mike Houston tied the score when he raced down the right wing and let a shot go from just inside the blueline that beat the Bruin goaltender low on the stick side. After two periods of play the score was tied at one apiece. In the third, the Bruins applied early pressure and Kevin Zarosky who replaced Travis Martyn in goal was called upon to make the saves, including a breakaway. With about nine minutes left in the game, Oshawa went ahead 2 - 1 and then got ,the , insurance goal with about three minutes left for a 3 - 1 victory. In the post-game ceremonies, ceremonies, each of the Toros received a trophy as Consola tion Finalists. In addition Paul Stainton was selected as Bowmanville's M.V.P. in the games. Toro Tidbits With the season over, the Toros on the Bantam 2's would like to thank the Fifth-Wheel Restaurant and Truck Stop for their sponsorship this year. Also a special thanks to managers Linda and Jim Houston and coaches Fred Braybrook and Ollie Perun who volunteered their time for the club. Last, but not least, to the players who provided some good entertaining hockey and the spirit of good sportsmanship this winter. Well Done!
