i 6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, May 16,1984 Section Two Couples Club Entertains Area Senior Citizens Saturday, April 14 was a night that will long be remembered remembered by the seniors of Cour- tice, Ebenezer and Maple Grove when they were entertained entertained by the Couples Club. Following a delicious supper, they renewed old acquaintances and turned up their vocal chords with a sing song. They were then entertained entertained by Mr. Bob Burton and friend, the Junior Farmer Square Dancers accompanied by the Wally McKnight family, Mrs. Enid DeCoe told a story, Mrs. Phyllis Cowle gave a reading, and last but not least a quartet comprised of Ron, Raymond and Murray Osborne and Brooks Pearce. The evening was a great success. Hope it can be repeated repeated next year! On Sunday evening, April 29, our Sunday School presented presented a musical "Kids Praise" featuring "Psalty" the talking song book enthusiastically played by Ken Down. Special thanks to Mrs. Brenda Metcalf, Mrs. May Ann Found and Mr. Murray Osborne who spent many hours with the children in preparation for this presentation. Also thanks to our musicians Mrs. Charlotte Hughes, Richard Hughes and Paul Herron and soloists Deanna Barnes, Lynda Herron and David Osborne who added greatly to the concert. On Tuesday, May 8 at 9:30 a.m. twenty nine ladies from our U.C.W. travelled by car to "Cullen Country Barns" in Milliken. Everything being inside the barns, the rain didn't dampen our spirits or interfere with our day of fun. Don't forget our "Potato Pie Supper" on Wednesday, June 27 at 6:00 p.m. Adults $5.00. Wishing a speedy recovery to Mr. Wilfred Aldsworth and Mr. Walter Tink. Hope they will both be back with us again soon. Tuesday evening the United Church Women Unit No. II met at Mr. and Mrs. M. Walker's home. We opened the meeting with the program first, which Mrs. Peacock had. It was another chapter from "Jesus Means Life." Was Jesus a revolutionary? This chapter delved into revolution. revolution. Mrs. Peacock put a lot of work into this chapter with a large number of points and questions on a poster she had made. We discussed who was to blame for the crucifiction of ' Jesus, the Jews, the Romans or Pilate? Many times in the Bible Jesus had broken the Jewish laws such as chasing the money changers from the temple, curing people on Sunday and others. We were asked to decide if Jesus was a revolutionist. Mrs. Trew and Mrs. Peacock continued the meeting with a short devotional devotional part. With each one having a violet to study, as a scripture was read about the beauty and perfection of a flower. Mrs. Quantrill read the minutes of the last meeting. Mrs. Trew brought a report from the general meeting to say we are having a strawberry strawberry supper June 22, a Friday night. Tickets are available and there will be tickets at the door. Mrs. BETHANY NEWS The Bethany U.C.W. held their meeting on Monday, May 7th, 1 in the church hall. Mrs. Ray Porteous presiding. Plans were discussed for Bake Sale at Arts and Crafts Show, Manvers Arena, Sat., June 2nd 1 - 3 p.m. Also plans to redecorate kitchen and church hall this summer. Portraits taken in the fall as a fund raising project by "Professional Portraits" Company. Information about this later. "Peace in' Our Time" was the devotional and program theme under the direction of Mrs. Frank Edwards and her group. Scripture passages were read and poems. Excerpts were read and discussed discussed from Albert Schweitzer's Schweitzer's book: "The Teaching of Reverence for Life" with emphasis on the section "Peace or Atomic War." Mrs. Edwards concluded with a passage from Colos- sians 3, "The peace that Christ gives is to be the judge in your hearts, for to this peace God has called you together. And be thankful." We are happy to see Mrs. Helen Smith (Mrs. Roy Gautier's mother) home from a month's holiday in England and Scotland. We welcome Mrs. Nelles Fallis, formerly of Millbrook area, to the village. Mrs. Fallis has purchased the former home of Mrs. "Vefcie." Mr. and Mrs. W. McMahon and Mr. and Mrs. Eric Smith, Toronto, were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. /Richard Johnston, Bowmanville, and attended the annual Roast Beef Dinner of St. /George's Anglican Church, Newcastle, . served this year in Newcastle Community Hall as the event has 'outgrown' the Parish Hall where it has been served in former years. Congratulations, Congratulations, St. George's! Mrs. Helen Rylcy and Mrs. Evelyn Mount have returned from an enjoyable three week vacation in Vancouver and Victoria, visiting many relatives relatives and friends. Mrs. Robert Jones has also returned from a visit with her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and John Rea and granddaughter Anna in Kitimat, B.C. A speedy recovery is wished to Mr. George Kay who underwent underwent surgery recently. About 80 persons assembled in Bethany United Church recently to enjoy the slide presentation, by Wes and Jeanne McMahon, of their recent tour of Australia and New Zealand. At intermission time a welcome cup of coffee and home-made cookies were served by members of the Committee of Stewards. The following ladies attended attended the Annual Spring Rally of Peterborough West U.C.W. in Springville United Church on Tuesday evening: Mary Capell, Ruby Shackleton, Jeanne McMahon, Nelly Michel, Cheryl Lindsay, Ruth Jennings, Vera Robinson, Marjorie Coppins and Carolyn Porteous. The theme of the Rally was "Living our Faith." Each of the six churches in that area were well represented represented (Bailieboro, Bethany, Cavan, Millbrook, Ponlypool and Springville). The evening got under way with the serving of dessert and beverage and a half hour of fellowship. Mrs. Ehel Monks, Peterborough, commented on some of the new books to be found among the many on display in the 'Book room' and a period for browsing was allowed. A lively sing song was led by Ruth Jennings and Jeanne McMahon, of Bethany. The worship service was conducted conducted by Bailieboro and was based on the 23rd Psalm. Special music was also presented presented by two young ladies from Bailieboro who rendered a beautiful vocal duet "Green Pastures" with guitar and auto harp accompaniment. Presbyterial U.C.W, Gwen Walton, Peterborough, brought greetings from Presbytery, Peterborough West area chairman, Velma Fallis, introduced the theme speaker, Mrs. Doris Ingham, Millbrook. Millbrook. Mrs, Ingham began her message by referring to two 'famous' persons whom she felt have really "lived their faith", namely Mother Theresa and John Vanier, through their work in the slums of India and with the Canadian handicapped respectively. respectively. Then becoming more personal, she recalled the life work of her father who served as a Methodist minister minister in southern Saskatchewan in the very early 1900's, where he became affectionately known as "The Bishop of the Loo Line"--an area extending northward from Mooscjaw. He too, truly 'lived his faith.' She concluded her message by suggesting some of the many ways by which U.C'.W. members of today can 'live their faith.' An invitation was extended by Bailieboro U.C.W. to hold the next West Peterborough Spring Rally in their church. Boiras Specials Monday, May 14th to Saturday, May 19th Elizabeth ville News Walker served a dainty lunch. The next meeting is to be at Mrs. Peacock's we hope. On Sunday last, most of the regulars from here attended the 150th. anniversary of Welcome church at Welcome. This Sunday Rev. Norman will speak at all three churches. Don't forget the Women's Institute District Annual is May 17th at Bailieboro. Several of the ladies from here attended Shiloh's Bazaar on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Mercer visited Mr. and Mrs. Quantrill recently. Mrs. Sul, Oshawa, called to see Mrs. Lewko recently. The foot clinic was held as usual at the Campbellcroft Hall on Monday. About a dozen attended. Anyone is welcome. It isn't only for seniors. Mr. and Mrs. C. Mercer had Mr. and Mrs. Philip Mercer; Mr. and Mrs. W. Terbenche, Port Hope; and Mr. and Mrs. R. Mercer and Brian call during the past week on different days. At the Senior Citizens meeting April 26th, Mrs. J. Barkwell and Mrs. Lewko were the only April birthdays.
