I T 6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, May 16,1984 | sptrt-tallt ut-ssos FLASHBACK -- 25 YEARS AGO -- The entire proceeds of Bowmanville Minor Hockey Night, held on March 25th, will be given to the families of the boys killed in the tragic Listowel Arena accident. This was decided at the meeting of the Bowmanville Recreation Department held at the Lions Centre on Thursday evening. Tickets will go on sale prior to the games. Admission will be 50 cents for adults, and 25 cents for children. In addition to the admission fees for Minor Hockey Night, donations for the fund for the Listowel victims families can be given to members of the Recreation Department. Present at. the meeting were the chairman, Jack Lander, Cliff Samis, A.H. Sturrock, Paul Chant, Claude Kilmer, Miss Dora Purdon, the secretary, and Doug Rigg, director of recreation for Bowmanville. Big hero of the game was Leonard Woodward who played a strong game at centre and came through with the ninth inning long hit that scored Don "Butch" Bagnell, to win the game. BINGO -- The Toronto Beaches Lions Club will again sponsor a Giant Charity Bingo at Greenwood Racetrack on Sunday, May 27th. The jackpot prize is $5000, with excellent prizes for all games. Parking and admission are free, with refreshments available throughout the afternoon. Gates open at 1:00 p.m., and Bingo starts at 3 o'clock. Proceeds from this special Bingo will go to Community Centre 55, Applegrove Community Complex, Senior Link, and Beaches Lions service projects. Join in the fun at Greenwood Racetrack (Coxwell and Queen Streets), Sunday, May 27th. OPENER -- Branch 178, Royal Canadian Legion will sponsor the Bowmanville Senior Baseball Team this season with the opening game scheduled scheduled for the holiday Monday, May 21st, Soper Creek Park at 1 p.m. Dave Snowden will manage the team, with Dave and Glenn Edmondson handling the coaching duties. Returning to the team this year from the Newcastle Lakers are Ron and John Stainton, Mark Luxton, Jeff Edmondson Edmondson and Bob Shantz. Pre-school Camps are for girls ' and boys, 3-5 years old and provide indoor and outdoor outdoor play, crafts, water and sand play. The V2 Camp is held at the historic Visual Arts Centre on Simpson Avenue from July 3-6 and July 9-13 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. A Horse Back Riding Camp at Hoskin's Stable will be held for girls and boys 6-14 years old, July 16-20 and July 23-27 from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon. Students learn riding technique, grooming and tacking. James Championship Trophy was won by Rick Stacey's team. The other members are Dave Snowden, Rob Cook, Les Smale, Bert Engley and Darion Engley. The runners-up were Jeff Edmondson, Am VanGoor, Ron Richards, Howie Pollard, Ray VanMeer and Howie Edmondson. Moe Richards had the high single for the year 380, Larry Georgiou the high triple 886, and the high average was won by John Pearson 241. The Dr. Keith Slemon most improved bowler award was won by Barry Henning with a Plus 70 Dr. Howard Rundle had plus 44. Ed Leslie presented the Club Merit Pin to Jack Lander for his work in the Community. Community. The Ken Luxton Best Sportsman Sportsman trophy was awarded to Gord Wilcox. Dave Rafuse, on the mound for the Merchants, pitched a fine game with three strike outs and only four hits against. Top batters were John Colwell 3-3, Brad Godfrey 2 - 2 and Joe Humenick 1 - 3 and one RBI. Final score-2-2 tie. On Wed., May 9th, the home opener at Memorial Park had to be cancelled due to wet diamond conditions. Come down to the Park on Wed., May 16 when the Merchants take on Casey's.
