"Elmer is good. He tells us how to be safe", explained young Julie Turner of the Newcastle Nursery School and Day Care. Julie and her class were one of the many schools across the province to take a tour of their local police station in celebration celebration of Police Week which ran from May 14 - 18th. The nursery school students took their tour last Thursday morning at the Newcastle OPP Station where they received received a bag of Elmer's Safety Tips and even got to sit in a jail cell. Annette Rowe, a supervisor at the Newcastle Day Care said that "personal safety and the law are being emphasized more than ever this month in the schools because of Police Week." Although the young children don't really have a full scope of what a policeman is and what his job entails, they know the important details. Rfr^VIKX R&tVINC RfrtMNK RfrMW When asked what a police man does, Mandy Rogers explained explained that they "kill bad guys so that they won't hurt us" - which was a good description, coming from a three-year old. Corporal Nimigon was the appointed tour guide at the OPP Station that day. He felt that the main concern should be placed on the fact that police are their friends and here to protect them. It's a thing that we often forget to appreciate later in life - like when we're getting a speeding ticket. Karen King wasn't extremely extremely interested in what the men in blue did, she just liked "the red stripe down the side of their pants." Policemen are still capturing capturing the hearts of young people with the unchanging aura of adventure that seems to surround surround them. However, in speaking with the pre-schoolers at New castle Nursery School it was apparent that Policemen, Michael Jackson, Mr. T., and the like, have joined Elmer the Elephant, and policemen on the list of children's heroes. When asked what would you like to be when you grow up, Adam Christie did not hesitate to answer "I don't want to be a policemen, I want to be a pirate", which is probably a wise career choice in this age of unemployment.
