By Harry VanBelle Product of U.S.A. KETCHUP 946 ml-2 lbs. V. Don't Jump The Gun A few warm days and everyone is ready to start the annual spring planting in the garden. Traditionally, we do most of the planting around the holiday weekend, which usually falls around the 24th, making this holiday weekend earlier than usual. Going by the temperature during the last five years I think that this coming weekend is just a bit too early, we can still get a lot of night frosts, cool weather during the day and a fair amount of rain, making it very hard for the tender plants that just come out of the greenhouse to survive the cold climate. Start planting after the 24th of May and you should be right on schedule for a beautiful garden. The cooler weather is excellent to get the new evergreens and trees and roses planted, to give the fibrous roots a chance to become established in their new location before the hot weather starts. This time of the year is also an excellent time to plant the perennials, such as delphiniums, bleeding hearts, ground phlox, and many more. When planning a new perennial bed, take your time and lay it out on paper before you start planting. Get the taller varieties at the back and then the medium size and then the shorter ones at the front. Try to color co-ordinate them in grouping so that it will have a mass effect. Keep in mind that most perennials will . bloom only during a specific time of the year; not right through the whole growing season, so you may have to add some annuals to give you consistent color throughout the year. When planning, mark all the details on paper first such as their blooming time and their growth habits. For instance, peonies will form large clusters of plants and will need the room to expand, the delphimiums will grow tall but will not spread too wide, and the ground phlox will need a fair amount of room, since they will spread out to at least 24 to 30 inches. Plant of the Week The Clematis vine. Probably one of the most beautiful vines available, which is hardy in this area. They come in various colors, red, white, mauve striped and different shades of the above colors. The Clematis is a heavy rooted plant, with frail branches especially when they are small, and may not show much the first year after planting, although they will have some blooms the first year. Clematis can be planted in any location, except on the north side, since they require some sunlight to bloom properly, with the east side, which gets the morning sun, being the best location. Since the plant depends very heavily on its root system, care should be taken to make sure that the soil that it is planted in consists of lots of manure or any other type of humus. They hate to have the sun beating down on their roots, so the area where the roots are located, which will be just around the area where the stem comes out, must have some protection in the form of a mulch of peatmoss or a layer of manure or plant a couple of annuals right around the stem, as long as the sun cannot beat down on the soil just above the roots. You will have to support them with a trellis or span some wires against the wall, and they will send their tendrills to twirl around that support. Every spring, they can be pruned back to ground level, or pruned back to where the heavy stems are starting. Things to do this week: Start applying weed and feed to the lawn. Feed the rose bushes with a well balanced rose food. Spray the driveway with weed killer to get a jump on the weeds. Finish pruning all flowering shrubs and hedges to keep them in trim. Prepare the beds for the annuals, add some plant food for good growth. Until next week, happy gardening.
