VON Needs V olunteer Visitors The VON is a well-known and beloved nursing service in the Durham Region. Caring for the ill, the staff endeavours to make each patient independent and knowledgeable about his or her condition. A newer volunteer service of the VON is the Friendly Visitor/Family Support Program. Begun in 1981 as a trial project in Oshawa, it has now grown and encompasses the Region. The VON Friendly Visitor Volunteers visit their shut-in and ill clients through ice, snow, muddy country roads and now, into spring's glorious sky-blue weather. Their new friends await them with pleasure, knowing that they will spend a happy time together - perhaps for a car- ride, chat, or visit over a cup of tea. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer with the VON, please telephone their office at (416)571-3151. Orientation on Thursday at Durham College For Sole Support Parents On Thursday, May 24, Durham College is conducting a special Orientation Day for sole support parents who are planning to attend the College in post-secondary studies. As an adult returning to school after a lengthy absence, the step can be a difficult one. This is a program to enable sole support parents to meet people in the same situation, and to gather some important information. The plan is to form a sole support parent group at Durham College. The orientation will take place in the College Lecture Theatre from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Information will be disseminated as to how those requiring financial help can take advantage of the Ontario Student Assistance Program. The guest speaker is June White of the Ministry of Community and Social Services, who will outline plans for a sole support parent group at Durham, and will discuss how those, with small children can arrange subsidized day care. Gerry Pettit, Senior Student Affairs Officer at the College, will discuss tuition fees, how the Student Services Department can be of assistance, and ways to improve study skills, Brenda Jackson, who is in charge of Computer Assisted Learning, will explain how . these programs can assist students. There will be a guided tour of the College. The Orientation Day is being co-ordinated by Richard Snowden, Student Affairs Officer, and Bonnie Chilton, Durham's Financial Aid Officer. Those interested in attending should contact the College at 576-0210, extension 394. DON'T LET WILDFIRES BE YOUP FAULT! ^
