i 2 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville. May 30,1984 Section Three Swiss Artist Visits Here Swiss artist Didier Mauron (right) and Pascale Marifiore are visiting in Newcastle before embarking on a tour which will take them across North America and into South America. By Catherine Denny Didier Mauron, a budding young artist from Vevey, Switzerland, is staying in Newcastle while he makes arrangements to show his works in Canadian galleries. The 25-year-old artist who just recently arrived in Canada is visiting with his aunt, Newcastle resident Gladys Metrailler, until he is able to set up some exhibitions in Toronto and possibly Quebec. After his stay in Canada, which he anticipates will last three months, Mauron will be setting out on a trip across the continent, a trip that will allow him to circulate his name and his art outside of Europe. Mauron is influenced somewhat by the surrealist tradition yet his work is unique because, unlike most modern-day artists, he uses a lead pencil as his only utensil. Although he started showing his works just a little over a year ago, Mauron is quickly becoming the toast of Switzerland's art circle where James Insurance DOUG JAMES ELEANOR DAMANT GAYLE WINDSOR 24 King St. East, Bowmanville 623-4406 BUSINESS DIRECTORY Accountancy Chiropractic WILLIAM C. A trip to North America occurred to the French- speaking artist about ten months ago. "When I saw how much the Canadian and American tourists loved my work, I decided to come to North America", explained Mauron. Another reason behind this trip was the fact that the artist had reached a dry point in his career. He needed new ideas, a new perspective, and felt that a different culture would revive his imagination. Pascale Marifiore, Mauron's travelling companion, will be busy on this expedition keeping a journal of Mauron's adventures which she intends to transform into a book"when they return home. Mauron is not certain as to when they will return to Switzerland. He wants to travel for at least another couple of years but, as he explained, that all depends on his success.
