The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, June 6, 1984 Section Two Museum Lawn Sale Attracts Many Customers Another Rainbow Landed Bob Jackman landed this 33" Rainbow trout recently recently at Vanstone's Mill. It weighed in at an even 16 pounds and is one of the largest caught around here this season. Let's Get Growing! By Harry VanBelle There was a wide assortment of articles, including including plants and a lacrosse stick on display at the Museum's lawn sale on Saturday and the crowds were there to mull over the items for just the choice bit of treasure they had been looking for. The Museum curator was most grateful to those who donated articles and came to help arrange them on the tables or help in other ways. LETTER TO EDITOR To the Editor: The Gala Gananoque Heritage Days Festival Committee of Gananoque, Ontario, is seeking old friends of the town and former residents, to specifically invite them to return and share with us the mammoth celebrations we plan this June to observe Ontario's Bicentennial and the town's own heritage. This invitation applies to new friends as well. To create a celebration of some size and scope, the Festival Committee has set aside three different weekends in which visitors and residents alike can kick up their heels and enjoy themselves. The first weekend, June 15 through 17, has the theme of a Town and Country Weekend while the second weekend, June 22 through 24, is entitled Festival of Friends. The third weekend, called Salute the St. Lawrence, will focus on the St. Lawrence River and the fun it provides to the people who live in or visit this area. They are well worth growing. To keep them in good shape a little care should be taken now to keep them clean of insects and fungus such as blackspot that will spoil the looks of the bush. With plants as it is with other things; it pays to prevent problems rather then cure them. The easiest way is to start yourself on a regular spray program which is easy to do, and will require little time. Roses should be sprayed every 14 days until the middle of August and then two or three more times before winter sets in. We are fortunate that we have such an excellent spray material available. For insects, we have a systemic spray that will penetrate the sap stream of the plant and will stay for up to three weeks, giving protection against any sucking insect or the insects that eat the leaf. For protection against the fungus diseases there is available a systemic fungicide which will stay in the foliage even during rainy days, giving excellent protection. Both these sprays can be mixed together for a combination spray, or they come already mixed, making it easy to apply. As with all chemicals, care must be taken in how you use, so you MUST read the label before making the application. The best time to spray is in the evening, so that the spray material is absorbed by the plant, and never spray during the heat of the day, since this will cause damage to the leaf, when the sun rays will be magnified through the droplets. The spray should be applied to all the foliage both on top of the leaf and also underneath the leaves. There are several different types of applicators on the market, the first one is the old faithful, the tank sprayer, they usually come in two or three sizes, one gallon, two gallon and the three gallon size. These sprayers come in two different styles, the plastic and the galvanized tanks. For my money, the only one to use is the plastic sprayer, it does not corrode with the chemicals. The other type sprayer is the so-called hose end sprayer, it works on the principle, that by attaching the sprayer to the hose, the water pressure syphens the chemical from the jar through a metering device and then is mixed through the water giving a complete mixed spray. These sprayers are the easiest to use and also are the most economical to purchase. Never use the same sprayer for killing weeds and then cleaning it out and using it to spray the insecticide on other plants since it is almost impossible to completely clean the sprayer of the chemical, which can do severe damage to your plants. Things to do this week Spray the rose bushes with a combination insecticide- fungicide. Finish planting all the annuals, and give them a feeding to help them get started, so they will give you a show quicker. From now on, evergreens can be trimmed to keep them in shape. Even the ones you have just planted this spring should be slightly trimmed to keep their shape. This will pay dividends for the rest of their lifespan. Get rid of dandelions, by spraying them now, or with a combination lawnfood with weed killer mixed. Make sure that you have at least 24 hours without rain after you have applied the chemical, so watch the weather report. Until next week, happy gardening. TOMORROW'S ^ORESTS...
