Summer Day Camp Held This Summer at VAC A creative summer day camp will be held at the Visual Visual Arts Centre of Newcastle Newcastle with qualified instructors instructors teaching pottery, art and dance. "We will explore the basic methods of working with clay and clay design. It is an easy medium to work in." Andrea MacDonald, an accomplished watercolor artist, will give the students an opportunity to express ideas and imagination. She is a graduate of Toronto's Ontario Art College and studied for a year in Florence, Florence, Italy. "We'll do a lot of pictorial work, based on motion. Some collage work is planned planned to show the idea of rhythm in a picture. We'll also be painting large murals murals to music," she said. The dance portion of the program will be taught by Nathalie Lauriault-Kirby. She holds a Bachelor of Education degree and was a member of Guelph's Burton Burton Dance Company in 1983. "We want the children to become aware of their body. It's quite simple as they catch on easily. We'll study jazz and modern dance and each afternoon they'll learn mime movements movements and creative dance." V PDRTICIPBCTIOn Weekends are for fun. Most of us look forward to putting our feet up and relaxing. relaxing. Not so for Mike Fernlund and the members of the Syndicate band. Syndicate is a travelling bar band and the weekends mean work. "We're working guys who wanted to perform and we finally found a combination combination that works," said Mr. Fernlund, the band's drummer and a native of Bowmanville. This band plays top 40, comtemporary rock covering covering material from Bob Seger to ZZ Top to Buddy Holly. "We try to play music that appeals to everyone," he said. "We don't try to blast people out of their seats."; Band members include Rick Ottenbrite and Dennis Watson, from Oshawa and Dave Coup land, from Brooklin. Bookings for the band are made by word of mouth or through an audition tape. "Because of the travelling time we try to work locally as much as we can. We had an offer to play in Montreal but it's too difficult for us to get time off work together," Mr. Fernlund said. The band uses a rental truck to carry their equipment. equipment. Accommodation is usually included where they play. "Sometimes the hotel rooms leave a lot to be desired," he laughed. It's the aim of the band to get established and become more well-known. "Down the road we may work on a video, but we're still a part- time band," he said. Syndicate will be playing locally at the Castle Hotel on June 8 and 9. The Brass Connection Entertains at S t. Paul's Concert The second in the series of three concerts to mark the 150th anniversary of the St. Paul's United Church was held Wednesday, May 30, at the Bowmanville High School Auditorium. The guest artists were The Brass Connection, a nine- piece band which features five trombones and a four-man rhythm section. The group's leader is Doug Hamilton, a Toronto surgeon who began to study the trombone at age 38. The other trombonists are: Ian McDougall, Jerry Johnson, Rick Stepton, and John Capon. The rhythm section is composed of Bruce Harvey, piano; Lome Lofsky, guitar; Dave Young, bass; and Jerry Fuller, drums.
