I 12 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, June 13,1984 Section Two l et's Get By Harry GrOWing! VanBelle Prune Evergreens Now to Keep Them in Shape To keep them healthy you must keep them in shape. Most people plant the evergreens and forget to prune them. Evergreens must be pruned every year and this must start the first year after planting. June is the best month for pruning, the trees have just gone through their first flush of growth and by trimming them now, they will fill in quickly and you don't even notice that they have been trimmed. It is very important important to use a sharp tool, so that the cut will be nice and smooth, which will heal over quicker. You can use a hedge trimmer for the uprights, uprights, or a hand pruner for some of the heavier branches, as long as they are sharp. Upright evergreens such as the Mountbatten Juniper or the Skyrocket Juniper should be pruned into a perfect upright form. You will notice that there is more growth at the top than at the bottom. This is common common in plant life, the sap that comes from the root, always always goes upwards so that the highest concentration of plantfood is at the end of the branches, which makes them grow faster than at the base of the plant. So, it is very important that upright evergreens are pruned heavier at the top to keep their pyramid shape. The spreading varieties such as the Andoora Juniper or the Pfitzer Juniper ,can be trimmed by two methods. The first is to take the hedge shear and trim it all around the outside, eventually making the tree into a round globe form. The other way is to take a hand pruner and select the longer branches and prune them back right in the tree, and still leaving the long tufted tips. By doing this the evergreen evergreen will look more natural, but it takes a bit more care in the pruning. One evergreen evergreen that is in a class by itself itself is the, Mugho Pine, it produces straight stems that grow up, these are called candles since they resemble candles on a cake. Now to prune them you must cut back each candle to the point were the whole tree will have a round look. This means that some candles candles will be cut back more than others, but this does not matter. For every candle candle cut back, three to four new candles will form next year, so by pruning them in a few years it will become a solid round mound. The best tool to use for this trimming trimming is the hedge shear. Other evergreens such as the Hick's Yew. should be pruned to the shape that you like, probably the best is round and flat on the top. The broad leaf evergreens such as the Euvonumus varieties can be trimmed to the shape you want them to be, round, square or into a hedge etc. Just use a hand trimmer and prune back. The most important thing to remember is that you prune every year. Things To Do This Week In The Garden Spray all the evergreens with a systemic insecticide, since the insects love the fresh lush growth. A systemic systemic insecticide will stay in the plant even if we get some rain. It's an excellent time to apply the next application of plantfood to the lawn, use the one that has the weedkiller weedkiller mixed with the plantfood, plantfood, to do two jobs. Apply the weedkiller to the driveways driveways to keep them free of weeds, also in between the patio stones or sidewalks. Give the annuals an extra feeding with 20-20-20 liquid fertilizer to get them going a bit quicker, for better enjoyment enjoyment this summer. Don't forget to feed the hanging baskets. They need to be fed every two weeks, since the watering you give them every other day leaches the plantfood from the soil and this must be replaced. replaced. Until next week, happy gardening.
