O.H.A. 78th CONVENTION "It's your Environment," was the theme of the 78th Annual Convention of the Ontario Horticulture Association, Association, held June 13, 14, 15, in Laurention University, Sudbury, Ont. An excellent attendance of 669 persons representing 154 societies throughout the province, province, enjoyed the very scenic beauty of the university as well as the entire city. For many years, Sudbury was known as the City of Rocks and Mining. Today's city is modern, clean and green lawns, parks and trees, everywhere. everywhere. One of the very exciting visits made by the delegates was of course to the very exotic "Science North." This very large federal government government project will be officially opened by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth on July 22. It is not completed as yet, but to see the huge endeavour build on, in and around rock, it is truly unbelievable! The rock in this particular area is considered by experts to be some of the oldest rock in the world. Wednesday evening was an excellent welcome to all by Laureen Corboy, Dist. director director of Dist. 13 (Sudbury) and a very talented group of young people and a Sr. Citizens choir entertained us all, and particularly particularly our O.H.A. Sec. Tony Hogervorst who displayed talents, not entirely secretarial! secretarial! Thursday's theme address speaker for the morning was Hon. Thursday afternoon a very different and new form of gardening was presented by Mr. Alex Gray, Inco Canada, entitled "Underground Gardening." Gardening." On Friday a.m. Chuck Jacobs of the Ministry of Agriculture brought greetings and presented a very enjoyable enjoyable talk "What's your Society's Image." Mr. Ted Penwill gave another lecture "Public Relations to Get New Members," which was most helpful, Mr. Maurice Marshall, new 1984-85 President Moderated the panel on "Allotment Gardening" and Bonnie Warner gave an illustrated talk on "Youth Work in your Society." Official tree planting planting in the afternoon and several very educational panels, "Pruning," "The Perennial Borders" proved very worthwhile to all. Of course our bus tour to "Science North", was thrilling and we recommend it highly as this summer's tourist attraction. attraction. Russell and Alma Gomme (former Sec. O.H.A.) gave a somewhat hilarious account of "What Retirement Means" and to see this "young" couple, it certainly is agreeing with them. Saturday morning saw the executive and new directors gathered together for their first meeting of the board. I am happy to report I was one of the new directors installed, as director of district No. 17. A general agreement by all in attendance, this was really an excellent convention and we urge more people to attend these gatherings. Next year's convention will be held in district 11, Windsor, Ontario at the university. JR. HORTICULTURE NEWS On June 13th the Orono Jr. Gardeners went to Cullen Gardens.' It began to rain just as we entered the gardéns, but we continued our,tour through the tiny miniature village. Some of. the flowers had not been planted yet but most beds were. We saw tree sculptures, sculptures, and sculptures made of flowers, and the rose bushes are about to open. The black swan was swimming with her babies on her back. When the big rain storm hit, we were all cosy and dry in the snack bar, eating hot dogs and drinking chocolate milk. Everyone returned home safely safely around 9:30 p.m. Be sure and give us a phone call to order your flower baskets for this Sunday's Decoration Day, June 24, in Orono Cemetery. ST. SAVIOUR'S CHURCH NEWS Members of Sunday school had charge of the morning service on Sunday. Sides- persons Lois and Bob Morton, Darren Lewis and Ronald Johnson, Server Tina Wood and leader Betty Ann Wood. The reading of Psalm 23 (responsively) by Cathy Stapleton, and the scripture lesson by Judy Leek. Presentation by Sunday School - Robert Raikes. Prayes by Tina Wood, Michael Tomlinson, Nicole French, Natalie Anderson and Lori Wood. 10 a.m. next Sunday - Combined Combined service at St. Saviour's followed by parade to Orono Park. ORONO UNITED CHURCH NEWS Two pretty vases of flowers were at the front of the church on Sunday morning, courtesy of the ladies of unit four. David Gray, organist, lead in the Psalm and scripture readings readings and the choir rendered the old favorite "How Great Thou Art." Happy Birthday to Eleanor Terrill who celebrates her birthday this Saturday, June 23rd. There will be a Mini Fashion Show by Leisure Lady. U.C.W. PRESENTATIONS The general meeting of the U.C.W. was held Thursday, June 14, in the main hall, with a pot luck dinner before hand. Everyone enjoyed the dinner and president Donna Scott welcomed everyone. Following the supper, Lois Brown demonstrated the art of making a quilt, without sewing. This quilt can be called "A Quilt for all Occasions." The blocks were all entitled something different, different, such as - Love, Duty, Living Faith, Prayer, Laughter, Laughter, Humor, Meditation, Worship, Worship, Compassion etc. Very beautifully constructed, Lois. Presentations were made to Lois Brown, a past President and to Betty Wright, who are soon leaving our community. A crystal vase to Lois and a crystal bowl to Betty were given by E. Bob will continue his education and is presently the Youth Minister in Bethel Baptist Church in Toronto. His parents' home on the third concession of Clarke, approximately Vn miles west of 115 and 35 will be open to friends to come say hello to Bob on Sunday, June 24, commencing at 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. WAY NE WESLEY Y'ELLOWLEES Wayne Wesley Yellowiees graduated at the May 29 Convocation Convocation of the University of Guelph with an Associate Diploma in Agriculture (Agr. Bus.). He also received the United Co-Operatives of Ontario Award. Wayne is the son of Harvey and Lois Yellowiees of Solina. CRAIG LARMER Craig Larmer graduated from the University of Guelph on June 1, 1984 with his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Agriculture degree, majoring in Crop Science. He was the recipient of the O.A.C. Student's Federation medal. Son of Glenn and Marion Larmer of R. R. No. 1, Black- stock, Craig is farming in partnership on the family farm. Item of Interest Joy Brooks leaves on Sunday for Buffalo where she will spend a week as one of four young people representing representing Canada at the 6th International International Leadership Development Development Center sponsored by the American Red Cross. This conference brings together delegates from several European countries, South America, Canada and the U.S. The other Canadian representatives representatives include one from Ottawa and two from Western Canada. MARIE LOUISE AGNEW Marie Louise Agnew of R.R. No. 4, Bowmanville graduated May 26th, 1984, from the Registered Nursing Diploma Program at Durham College.
