Each weekend through to the 26th of August, Montreal area baseball (or girls' softball) teams will either host teams from other regions of Quebec, Eastern Ontario or New Brunswick, or visit an area in one of these provinces. Sports Exchange accepts all teams affiliated with Baseball Quebec, Little League Quebec, Softball Quebec or equivalent governing bodies in Ontario and New Brunswick. Monday, June 11, the Town Sports Mosquitos edged Orono3-2 at Orono in a game that the Newcastle boys were fortunate to win. The winning goal was scored in the dying minutes, from a penalty shot taken by Chris Hull. Chris also got another goal, while the third Newcastle goal was scored by Richard Burns. The same night the Port of Newcastle Mosquitos were defeated by a score of 5 - 2 in Tyrone by the Tyrone II Mosquitos. Chris Potter and David Sheridan were the marksmen in a losing cause. The Virtue Fuel Pee Wees continued their winning ways with a convincing 7 - 0 victory over Bowmanville United as the Newcastle boys played their best game of the year. Merchants Defeat Oshawa Midgets 2-0 On June 14th at Durham Fields, the Bowmanville Merchants Fastball team defeated the Oshawa Midgets 2-0. Dave Rafuse pitched an excellent game with eight strikeouts and allowing only two hits. Batting for the Merchants - W. Hunt, S. Allen, G. Trianta- filou, J. Humenick, D. Osmond and J. Ryhorchuk; all with one each. Five runners were left on base, only one error made. Next home game at Memorial Park Wed., June 20 vs. Oshawa Optimists. Girls Soccer Atoms Still Undefeated Last Tuesday, June 12, the Girls' Atom Team continued its undefeated season by tying Ajax 2 - 2. Ajax struck early, scoring from a large crowd bunched in front of the Bowmanville Bowmanville goal. Bowmanville then slowly took control, pushing Ajax back with Sarah Couch tying the score before the end of the first half. The girls came out flying to start the second half with Sarah again scoring to give the team a 2 - 1 lead. Ajax however, did not give up and scored the tying goal with a few minutes left to go. The girls played well, having to go with an altered alignment. Crystal Courneyea moved back from her normal defense position and played a strong game in goal. Cheryl- Ann Cole with her hard kicks often cleared the ball from her own end and out of danger. Allison Morris also played a strong game on defense as did Katie Woodcock and Susan McCullough on offense. Keep up the good work girls. Newcastle May Be on Peterborough Stage The Town of Newcastle will get its day in the spotlight spotlight at Peterborough's Arbor Theatre if a recommendation recommendation from the town's general purpose and administration administration committee is endorsed by council.
