Specialist (Agriculture) Durham East 4-H'ers at the Brooklin Fair Durham East was well represented represented at this year's Brooklin Fair. Elaine Barkey had the Champion Heifer in the 4-H Inter-club Dairy Calf' Show and was also Reserve Champion Showman. Also competing in the Dairy Show were Jay VanCamp, Teresa Heeringa, Rene Heeringa, Elaine and Glenn Barkey. Competing in the 4-H Inter-Club Beef Show were Andrew Davey, Penny Piper, Sharon Cornish, Bob and Brian Goble. Congratulations to all of the competitors! Rural Organizations and Services Specialist (Home Economics) By Barbara VVeese Quilting and Personal Finance At the recent 4-H Quilting and Personal Finance Achievement days, several 4-H members received Honour Awards for their participation in the 4-H Homemaking Clubs. County Honours for the completion of six projects went to Natalie Green and Elaine Kelly, Blackstock; Margaret Prins, Solina; Tammy Farrow, Wesley ville; Connie Sheppard and Michele Leggette, Elizabethville; Catherine Grills, Morrish and Wilfreda Mostert and Valerie Sikma, Providence-Shaw's. Provincial Honours for the completion of 12 projects went to Carolynn Craig, Tyrone; Robynn Ward and Gail Lamb, Enniskillen; Gwen Hiemstra, Solina and Eleanor Kelly and Lynn McLaughlin, Black- stock. Advanced Honours for the completion of 18 projects went to Susan Francis and Judy Virtue, Enniskillen. Special Canada 4-H Council Certificates were presented to Marilyn Hurren, Bethany, and June Smith, Elizabethville for the completion of five years. A highlight of the Awards Presentation was the presentation presentation of the new 4-H Bicentennial Bicentennial Awards to all leaders and many of the members. By John E. Finlay, Agricultural Representative CENTENNIAL SHOW MARKSFOUNDING OF HOLSTEIN ASSOCIATION: One hundred years ago a handful of breeders with black and white cattle got together at the Canadian National Exhibition Exhibition to plan the breed association now known as the Holstein Association of Canada. To mark that event Holstein breeders this year will have their largest CNE show ever, a two day event on August 16 and 17 called the "The Canadian 100". The first day will feature the Junior show, with 4-H members competing in three showmanship classes, followed followed by judging of calves for conformation. Awards will be given to the winners, along with a "Canadian 100" memento to every participant, Later in the day a wine and cheese party will precede the Sale of Stars auction. On day two, August 17th, breeders and visitors are expected expected from across Canada and around the world to see a group of the best Holstein cattle in Canada and the U.S.A. paraded for judge Richard Keene of Gilbcrts- ville, New York. Special trophies have been donated by 31 companies and organizations organizations in Canada, U.S.A. and foreign countries. In the barns space has been allotted for county displays, and a herdsman herdsman award will be presented. Following the show a beef barbeque will be held on the CNE grounds. "Canadian 100" will be a highlight of the Holstein Associations' centennial year, which has included special field days, shows and special events. In the Durham County area, the Durham County Holstein Club will hold their Annual Twilight Meeting and Barbeque Barbeque at Youngfield Farms, Nestleton on July 18th at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available from Holstein Club directors. 1984 PROVINCIAL 4-H LEADERSHIP WEEK By Barbara Weese, R.O.S. Specialist (Home Economics) From June 23 to 29, 1984, Marilyn Green will be representing representing Durham East at the 1984 Provincial 4-H Leadership Leadership Week near Huntsville. Twenty three members of the Bowmanville Women's Institute met at the home of Mrs. C. Downey on Thursday, June 7, at 12 noon. Institute Grace was sung. A delicious pot luck luncheon was enjoyed. Mrs. C. Bell thanked Mrs. Downey. Following the luncheon the meeting opened with the singing of O Canada. Mrs. C. Bell, Vice President welcomed welcomed the members. Minutes of the last meeting were read by Mrs. L. Tomlinson. Report was given by Mrs. C. Downey who was our branch delegate to the Officers Conference Conference in Waterloo in May.
