The State team had been unlucky in their first two games, to lose both by a single goal after dominating both games for most of the time. The Peterborough club were unbeaten in league play prior to the game and were confident confident of extending their streak. On a sunny day with a strong swirling wind, the team which mastered the conditions would emerge victorious. After ten minutes of play Bowmanville took the lead and never relinquished it, scoring two more goals to take a 3 - 0 lead into the second half. Playing against a stiff wind, the whole team dug in and held the home team to a single goal whilst scoring another one to clinch their first Ontario Cup victory. It was a true team effort with everyone contributing 1(X percent. Special mentior should be made of goalkeepei Tony Van Hoof who kept us in the game with many saves, and mid fielders Ken Davies and Brad Richard. Salem unit of St. Paul's U.C.W. met on Tuesday, June 12 at the home of Iva Twist for the final meeting of the 83-84 season. Kay Stephen opened the meeting with a June poem and then preceded with the business. At the Fall Fair in late September, Salem unit will look after the produce booth. We agreed to continue catering catering for the five Medical Luncheons for the next season. On Sept. 19, the U.C.W. groups will hold a Pot Luck Supper at St. Paul's. This date is also the date of our first Medical Luncheon. The final details will be worked out at our September meeting. Dennison Girls Atoms Soccer Round Up for All Newcastle Teams By Dick Budel Here we go with another kick at the soccer ball. The two Mosquito teams from Newcastle were both successful successful on June 18th. The Town Sports boys defeated Mary Brown's by a score of 6 - 2 as Chris Hall scored four goals and Brian Buma two for Newcastle while Ryan Putnam Putnam and Jeff Rohr replied for Mary Brown's. The Port of Newcastle boys snapped out of a slump with a vengeance, dumping Hampton Hampton 8 - 1 right in Hampton. Jason Carroll scored three, Chris Potter two, and Tim Holland, John Rogerson and David Sheridan one each. Keep up the good work boys! June 19 saw a long winning streak ended as Tyrone Pee Wees defeated Virtue Fuels Pee Wees 4 - 3 in Newcastle. For most of the Newcastle boys this was the first loss since the 1982 season. Give Tyrone full credit for this one, they wanted to win more than the Newcastel boys, and they deserved the victory. Frank Cunonico tallied twice and Lance Haluka and Robert Pascoe one each for Tyrone. Jan Vanderheyden two and Jeff Koopmans replied for Virtue Fuels. The Kraco Contracting Atoms registered their 4th straight shut-out, this time 7 - 0 over Solina. Ben Vanderheyden Vanderheyden and Steven Miller potted two each, Dennis Ricard, Chuck Carr and Todd Jones one each. David Budel and Dennis Ricard shared the shut-out as coach Vanderheyden Vanderheyden made some changes so that the goalies also will see. some action. The K of C Colds Squirts came out on the short end of a 6 -1 score in a game played in Newcastle on June 21. By John Morris On Tuesday, June 19 Dennison's Dennison's Girls Atoms defeated Pickering by the score of 1 - 0 with only the fine play of the Pickering defense and goalie preventing a higher score. Bowmanville dominated the first half with all the girls led by Alyssa McLennon, Amy Degroot, Tracy Michaud and Jessica Knoop, working hard to keep the ball in the Pickering Pickering end. Cheryl Ann Cole proved to be as competent on offense as she is on defense, bouncing one booming shot off the post and coming close to setting up goals on several fine corner kicks. Sarah Couch finally broke through to score what proved to be the winning margin. At the start of the second half, Dennison's seemed to think the game was over as they almost allowed Pickering to tie the score. Only the fine play of Cheryl Ann and Crystal Courneya on defense and Stephanie Sleep in goal preserved the shutout. The rest of the girls are going to have to come back and help out if they want to maintain their fine record. They must remember that the game consists consists of two halves and isn't over until the final whistle! The girls now have a 4 -1 - 0 record which they'll try to improve on, on Tuesday, June 26 at Brooklin.
