This marks the 18th consecutive year the Canada Safety Council has sponsored this event which this year, in cooperation cooperation with Transport Canada, will emphasize "Small Vessel Regulations". Listed below are 10 steps for safely fuelling your motor boat. A teaspoon of gasoline can have the explosive explosive power of a stick of dynamite. Take these precautions when refuelling your motor boat: 1. Moor the boat securely. 2. Shut off the engine and make sure all passengers are ashore. 3. Don't smoke; extinguish all flames; and close all windows and hatches. 4. If a portable tank is used, remove it from the boat and fill it ashore. 5. Don't use electrical switches. 6. Ground nozzle against the filler pipe of the gas tank to avoid a static spark. Don't overfill. 7. Wipe up all spills and dispose the wipers safely. 8. Close all fuel tank openings securely. 9. Before starting the engine, open up and ventilate all compartments thoroughly. 10. Turn on blower for at least 5 minutes and check for vapour odours. By Norm Smith In recent years, Bowmanville Bowmanville lawn bowlers have won the Fred Cole Memorial Trophy for Men's Pairs in "odd" years but have been defeated by visiting teams in "even" years. 1984 proved no exception to this pattern and when play finished around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 23, those stalwart bowlers from Lindsay, Syd Elsdon (skip) and Bill Tewksbury (lead) were declared winners with the excellent score of 56 plus seven. To make matters worse, not one of the four Bowmanville teams was among the prize-winners; whatever magic there is in "odd" numbers, we hope it works next year! Carswell of Oshawa in replacement for another Oshawa team which had thought the game was next week. Visiting teams from Cannington, Cobourg, Lindsay (two), Oshawa (four), Port Hope (two), and Whitby completed the roster and after coffee and muffins provided and served by Rena Bathgate (President of the Ladies Section) and Evelyn Smith, the game was on. Ned Town (skip) and Cyril Hughes (lead) of Port Hope got three on the first end and continued to score freely against Bryan Hughes and Harold Bennett of Bowmanville Bowmanville to reach 21 plus one and lead the field. (The maximum score in a 14-end game is 21 points with the plus score used only to break a tie in the aggregate count.) A. Hamill and A. Hunter of Whitby scored 18 against Clarence Oke and Ab Mavin of Bowmanville Bowmanville - Oke won the trophy last year with Mervyn Brock, now a resident of London, Ont. - while there were three teams with 16 and three with 14. In accordance with the "high vs high" rule, Town and Hamill played each other after the lunch interval and although Town again got off to a good start, Hamill caught him in the third end and forged forged steadily ahead to win by 21 plus one to eight for a total of 39 plus one. Not far behind were Vic Highfield and Jack Cook of Oshawa who added 20 to their first game score of 16 to give them 36. Third place with 35 at this stage was held by Syd Elsdon and Bill Tewksbury who after a first game win with 14, cut loose in the second game to beat E. Carswell and yours truly 21 to three. Query: how did we manage to get anything at all against such superb bowling? , The remaining two-game winner was Oscar Woll,stein (with Peter Bathgate) who kept local hopes alive by adding adding 14 in the second game to 16 in the first game. This latter was a cliff-hanger as M. Foxhall and Partner of Cobourg, down 9 - 16 at the 13th end, scored five in the last end to scare Oscar and Peter out of their bowling shoes, And so, as Mr. Pcpys might have said, to tea: delicious sandwiches and a marvelous cake -1 wish you would give the recipe to Evelyn, Marg! In the final game, Elsdon and Tewksbury buried Woll- stein and Bathgate 21 plus seven to four; in their huge score they had a six, two five's and a four - worthy champions indeed! Hamill and Highfield were more evenly matched but the latter won second prize with 52 by scoring 16 on 10 ends out of 14 but had to concede a five and a three to their persevering persevering opponents. The remaining prize winners winners were: High 2-Game Winner: M. Foxhall and Partner of Cobourg with 51 plus one; second high 2-Game winner: A. .Hamill and A. Hunter of Whitby with 49 plus one; High 1-Game winner: W. Southern and A. Graham of Cannington with 46; second high 1-Game winner: J. Hunter and C. Norton of Oshawa with 38. May 22nd, the Bowmanville Golf and Country Club entertained entertained the Business girls, nine holes of golf were played with dinner afterwards.
