Providence-Shaws W.I. Holds Pioneer Picnic Dr. R. VanHoof wishes, to announce that he has moved the location of his practice to 98 King St. W. (2nd floor) (former Glen Rae Dairy building) Bowmanville, Ontario L1C1R4 NOW OPEN Telephone 623-7261 or 623-2533 Providence - Shaw's W.I. celebrated the first day of summer, June 21, with a Pioneer Picnic at the home of Past Pres. Margaret Killeen. It was a beautiful day and the foods served brought reminders reminders of the past. Chilled apple cider, scotch eggs, cornish pasty, deep dish meat pies - some with biscuit and some with potato toppings, homemade homemade rolls, fiddleheads, salads and molded jellied salmon, filled 'us all. Then came the desserts which included included pies, fresh strawberries strawberries and butter tarts. President Annabelle Rickard welcomed the members members and one guest and urged us to read the writings of Suzanna Moodie and Catharine Catharine Parr Trail, pioneer women with a story to tell. The roll call was to name a woman in public office and tell what she does. The answers ranged from Queens and elected elected officials to institute officers. officers. Dorothy Crago reported for the float committee for Orono Fair Parade. Barbara Wood told of the trip to the Erland Lee Home. Margaret Killeen reported on the District Annual at Bladtstock and reminded reminded us that toft; 18 was the " tentative date/or the Fun Fair at Solina. Anyone wishing to write to Dr. Bette Stephenson, urging that Family Studies be a compulsory compulsory subject in Secondary Schools should address it to her at the Ministry of Education, Education, 18th Floor Mowat Block, Queen's Park, Toronto M7A 1L2. The members accepted an invitation to Hampton W.I. in January. Ruth Cahais brings credit to our branch by designing and making a quilt block to represent represent this district, as part of the Institute hanging recently unveiled unveiled in the Legislative Building Building in Toronto. The president suggested we make a project of preparing a history of our own home, something along the idea of a Farm Log, with comments on interesting items that have happened over the years. The program was a Radio Interview with hostess 'Betty Kennedy' (Barbara Wood) and four well known women. The life of Dr. Emily Stowe, born in 1835 into a Quaker family, who raised a family and became a medical doctor after being a schoolteacher, and who fought for the woman's right to vote, was portrayed by Thelma Lane. Pauline McGibbon, former Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, looked very much like our Judy Buma, who answered questions about her life and work. Margaret Killeen took the part of 'Mom' Whyte whose desire to help others grew into a very large family and took her to Nigeria to do similar work. A look at the life of the late Judy LaMarsh will be remembered as with wig and glasses, Margaret Arnott gave a very true account of her career. The cigarette was there too. Judy wrote four books and I'm sure some of us will be using this for our summer reading. This certainly was a program to remember. We will meet again in September on the third Thursday and the President wished us a good summer until then. Shirley Brown, P.R.O. This is a three week festival consisting of performances by Symphony Orchestras, chamber groups and choirs as well as recitals by soloists, and takes place in local churches, castles and concert halls. The festival this year is the 37th, begun and nurtured over the years by the late Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears, the latter still taking an active part in the Festival, although he has suffered a stroke and can no longer sing. Besides the wonderful music, Mrs. Payne also enjoyed enjoyed the renewal of friendships and the beautiful flowers everywhere, the bracing sea air and fine weather. On the second Sunday she attended service in the historic church of St. Mary in Dedham, in the Valley of the Stour, which is the heart of John Constable country. Evening walks in this area were a real delight, and supper in the local pubs included included interesting conversation conversation with the "regulars" which was much enjoyed. „ _ . . , .
