Newcastle's regional councillor for Ward One says it's time the town and school board made sure that public playing fields are properly trimmed. "The kids cannot find the ball in the playing field because because of the long grass," said Councilor Ann Cowman. Cowman. Many of the fields she was referring to are maintained by the board of education as part of a school playing field. But rather than being a showcase, she described them as a "mess". Councillor Bruce Taylor, the member of council responsible responsible for the community community services department, said the fault is not with the department but with limited limited funds which do not allow the grass to be cut as often as may be necessary. He reminded the councillor that nature works against the department in early spring by causing the grass to grow faster. "We try to put a restraint budget in place and we can't be all places at all times," Councillor Taylor said. Staff were asked to review review the issue raised by Councillor Cowman and to bring back a report on the alternatives. "Somewhere, we've got to find a middle ground we can live with," said Councillor Councillor Taylor. A HOLE BUNCH -- Three holes-in-one were recorded recorded at the Bowmanville Golf Club in the past two weeks. Not to be outdone, Gord Evans aced the same hole a week later, also using a six iron. His ace was witnessed by Jerry Evans. Shirley Doughty recorded the third ace when she hit a seven iron 120 yards to the centre of the cup on the 13th hole. Her shot was witnessed by Ed and Eleanor Fisher.
