This week they are at their camp-site north of Fenelon Falls. Jim is certainly enjoying his retirement, keeping busy with his mini-farm at the corner of the 4th line and Hwy. 35. Many from Pontypool attended the funeral of the late Lloyd Ransberry last Tuesday or paid their respects at the Northcutt Elliott Funeral Home in Bowmanville. The late Mr. Ransberry was well known in this area. In former years he provided music at many local dances. To his widow, Neta, his daughter, Gwen, his son, Ernie, and all other family members, we send our condolences. Mrs. Ransberry's sister, the former Mary Scott who was born and attended school in this community, was also buried on Tuesday in Oshawa. Our thoughts are with the Ransberry family in its double loss. Arlene Carnes of Atherley ' was a visitor last week with her parents, Lloyd and Mildred Brown, and also called on other friends in the village. Don and Barbara Cochrane of Hampton also recently called on the Brown's. Congratulations are extended to Mr. and Mrs. Keith Fee who were married on Saturday, June 30th, at 5:00 p.m. in Pontypool United Church. Rev. John Lindsay officiated with Frank Stacey, soloist,, and Leslie Fairhurst, organist. Reception and dance followed in the Pontypool Community Centre with the Pontypool U.C.W. catering. The bride is a daughter of Ralph and Anne Holtby. Speedy get-well wishes are sent to Hazel Curtis, who returned home on Tuesday following surgery in Peterborough's Civic Hospital and also to Leonard Cain who has not been well for the past two weeks. When Leonard misses a card party, there is definitely something wrong. Our thoughts are also with Gerald Fisk, Bill Strong and others who are ill at this time. On Tuesday, July 10th, Pontypool Keenagers are taking a bus trip to Bracebridge and a boat cruise on scenic Lake Muskoka. Horseshoes have been purchased by the Keenagers and pits have been made at the home of Mervin and Dorothy Bowins on Amelia Drive (street west of the main thoroughfare). Anyone wishing to display their ability or just have fun may do so on Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00. Age is unrestricted. The Pontypool "Jade Gardens" men's ball team played in a tournament in Allentown, Pennsylvania, over the holiday weekend. As in the past, the team came home empty-handed but reported a good time with the Americans being most hospitable. The men played three games, all on Saturday, against teams of quite high calibre. Even though winless, the team is undaunted and plans to return next year. Steve and Helen Lizka had an enjoyable holiday weekend. They travelled by bus to New York City and from there took a boat cruise. Suzanne Muirhead and Pathfinders, Melissa Dunford and Karen Medd, left on Sunday morning to spend a week in Philadelphia, Penn. We were sorry to hear that Louis McGill of Bethany had an accident over the holiday weekend. He was helping with the haying on Mr. McQuarrie's farm when he received a cut on his left arm which required twenty stitches. The injury is very painful. We wish Lou a speedy recovery. A lovely new home is being built on the 6th line just east of Ballyduff. Mr. and Mrs. Croft reside now on the Pickering farm and Mrs. Croft's mother, who presently lives in Toronto, is building on the lot which was formerly severed from the farm. Jim and Pearl McMullen are also having an addition built to their home in the hamlet of Ballyduff. Pontypool United Church will not be closing for a month this summer. Rev. Lindsay will be absent for 5 weeks. The following will be guest speakers while he is away. July 22 - Don Genge - Previous Director - Quin Mo Lac Camp. Church service is at the usual hour of 10:00 a.m. St. Thomas More Parish does not close in the summer either. Mass is held each Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in the Pontypool United Church with Father Walsh officiating. Laverne and Marie Finney and family were holiday weekend visitors in the Kingston area when they were guests at Marie's newphew's wedding. Last week the local postmaster, Wayne Hunt, was on holidays. Carole Stinson was postmistress for the week. At the I.E. Weldon Secondary School 1983-1984 Awards and Graduation Exercises held on Thursday, June 28th, Manvers students made a fine showing. Out of seven Ontario Scholars, two of them - Anja Switzer and Liz Werk - are from Pontypool. Laurie Banham of Hwy. 35 is also an Ontario Scholar. Alison Scott of R.R. 1, Janetville received the General Proficiency Award for Year Four and Deanna Vivian of Janetville was presented with a Citizenship Award - Class of '73 Cup. Pontypool area students who received special awards and prizes were Diana McCabe, Gen. Prof. Yr, 4, General Level; Marsha Weidmark, Secretarial Award Deserving Students; Peter Bolton, Most Improved English Student, Gr. 12 to Gr. 13; Anja Switzer - County of Victoria Bursary His 551; Liz Werk - Gertrude Frost Memorial His 551; Jeff Strong - Special Vocational KFS 221 ana Paul Van de Valk received a Technical award from Falcon Tool and Mould for Apprenticeship or Skill Training. Grandview Public School Graduation was also held on Thursday evening, June 28th. "Hay Day" Held in Wesleyville WESLEYVILLE This past week was a busy one on the lakeshore. On Saturday, July 7 a "hay day" was sponsored by two chemical companies, the Vicon machinery company and the Ashby brothers. The Vicon hay balers were demonstrated on two plots on the Sculthorpe farms. The use of various sprays was also made known. A barbecue was held following the activities and about 40 farmers were present to observe and share. The day was not the best for this type of gathering, being both cool and damp. On Sunday on the west side of the creek from Ashby's a tetrathlon was held on the Sculthorpe riding fields. The weather was much better and from morning Until late afternoon there was a colourful show of riding and other competitions. Cars lined the road and filled the parking lot, with riders and viewers moving about everywhere. This was in charge of Mr. Ed Down of Hope township and the area participating was central Ontario from Belleville to Toronto and north to Sudbury. There were about 85 contestants for swimming, shooting air pistols, running and cross country riding. The latter for a distance of about 1500 metres. Church service for Hope township charge of the United Church was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Currelly of the Canton appointment. It was conducted by Rev. Rex Norman, well known to many of his hearers, who represents the Operation Eyesight Universal. Once again we had the privilege of being in a beautiful setting to worship and sing, "For the Beauty of the Earth". Bill Barrowclough and David of Peterborough spent part of the weekend with Harold Barrowclough. Mrs. June Nichols was in Chatham the first of the week with family members. Ladies have been quilting for some time at the Bric-A- Brac in Port Hope and finished the last quilt on Friday, July 6. This one was designed and made by Kathryn McHolm and is striking in appearance, showing several well known houses in Port Hope. It was especially pleasant during the past week to have the tea room available at the back. Paul Hoskin, on leave from his duties with the navy, arrived in Ontario last Thursday, driving all the way from Vancouver Island, a long trip which shows the hugeness of the country, as no other way can. He will be here till the end of the month. The Tufford family enjoyed a picnic at the Ganaraska Park on Sunday afternoon.
