Highlights of OBITUARIES EILEEN RUSK (Mrs. James C. Clare) The death of Mary Eileen Clare, widow of the late James C. Clare, occurred on Thursday, June 28, 1984, at Toronto General Hospital. Born in Ireland, she came to Canada long ago with her parents and her sister, who survives her, Edna Rusk of Cobourg. At one time Eileen Eileen taught English in an Oshawa Collegiate, and later she taught in Toronto. She was for a decade or more on the staff of Bowmanville Bowmanville High School in the English Department, until her retirement, about 1980. Her husband, whom she had married a few years earlier, died that fall. Her death came as a shock to her friends. In June she had visited the Art Gallery in Victoria Hall, Cobourg, to see the exhibition exhibition of work by Mrs. Eccles, teacher of Art in the Bowmanville Bowmanville High School. Interment Prospect Cemetery. JAMES THOMAS MACKIE James Mackie passed away suddenly on Saturday afternoon, July 14th, 1984 at 5 p.m. as a result of a heart attack. Mr. Mackie recently observed his 77th birthday on June 20th. Mr. Mackie started his farming operation in Lotus many years ago and augmented augmented his farm income for several years as an artisan, artisan, both as a blacksmith and wood working for local farmers. He married the late Mildred Stinson and together together through hard work and long hours purchased two farms which they farmed successfully till Jim's death. Mrs. Mackie predeceased her husband by 11 years. They also raised two adopted sons, Larry and Joseph, who were left homeless at the death of Jim's sister Georgina. Jimmy, as he was known far and wide, was deeply respected respected by his peers for his honesty and integrity, his tireless energy and perseverance. perseverance. A thrifty Scot, he led a Spartan existance, despised despised ostentation and laziness laziness but admired those who were successful from their own endeavors. Mr. Mackie was an ardent supporter of the Liberal regime. regime. Despite the lack of much formal education, he was an avid reader and was knowledgeable and conversant conversant on almost any topic. Jim was a social and hospitable hospitable chap who enjoyed nothing nothing more than a visit with his peers over a hot toddy. He was a most helpful neighbor and was always available when someone needed a hand. Numerous local residents have been beneficiaries of his acts of assistance in one form or another which he performed performed with innate modesty and devoid of any fanfare. The funeral service was conducted at the Wagg Funeral Funeral Home in Port Perry with Rev. Clarke of Port Perry officiating and who provided a message of comfort comfort for the bereaved. Interment Interment was at the family plot in Yelverton United Church Cemetery. The bearers were neighbors - David Foote, Al Quinn, James Gray, Jim Walsh, Floyd Stinson and Harvey Malcolm. Malcolm.
