Watch for our Grand Opening in Coming Weeks! by Tom Grimmer Keith Long reaches onto the gun rack in his Cobourg shop and takes down a 50 calibre Hawkins muzzle loader. Wait a minute, a muzzle loader? "Sure, they still make them, look at this beaut," he says, smiling his friendly smile. He draws the tamper stick out of its holder under the barrel of the gun, and demonstrates how one loads one of these old fashioned guns: first the powder is put in, tamped, then a paper wad-wrapped ball is shoved down the barrel barrel and it, too, is tamped firm. If the gun was to be fired, a cap would be put in the flintlock-type mechanism to ignite the powder. "First you hear the bang of the cap, then this great whoosh as the powder catches and fires the ball. This is a fun gun," he says. Shooting with the muzzle loader may be fun, but let there be no mistake: this man is serious about his guns, and he should be. Quality guns are a family tradition. Keith Long has joined his dad, William, in thegunsmi- thing business, opening W.R. Long's Gunsmith in the rear of the old Winchester factory on Brook Road Spotlight on Keith Long The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, August 1,1984 9 North. He knows he has a reputation to live up to. "You see, first there's gunfixers," he says with a note of contempt. "Then there's gunsmiths, who are something of a dying breed. There's about ten in the whole country, and not that many that can rebuild an entire gun. Then there's us. We're the gunsmith's gunsmith-." And that they are. William William Long was an ordnance engineer -- a title he retains retains to this day -- with the Canadian armed forces, at various times stationed in Whitehorse, Winnipeg and a number of other Canadian cities. About 20years ago he came to Cobourg to work for Winchester of Canada, where he supervised ammunition ammunition manufacture. Those were the days when, his son says, "Cobourg was the gun capital of Canada." Keith says his dad always had a small gun business on the side, primarily as a hobby, and when his dad left Winchester (the Canadian Canadian plant was closed down shortly after that) the hobby became a more serious business. business. "This business just grew like crazy, a cottage industry industry that grew into an industry," industry," says the junior Long. Until recently, they had never bought an advertisment of any sort, building a world-wide reputation reputation by word of mouth. They're customers include collectors of exotic guns, although although they are primairly geared toward the serious hunters and target and trap and skeet shooters. They also do some business with the Pentagon. What makes them the gunsmith's gunsmith is the fact that a lot of their work is done for other people in the same trade, as well as warranty work for more than a half- dozen manufacturers. "I figured I might as well learn from the best, so I'm following in my dad's footsteps, says Keith of his entrance into the new business. business. Not unlike the craftsmen of a day most people probably think is past, he is taking up his father's trade. The younger Long left a successful career in upper management management with a large Toronto soft-drink manufacturer to join his dad in the gunsmith business. "Really, there's no money in it," he says. "I gave up a job where I paid more in tax than I'll probably make in a year here." He says, though, that the market is solid and with the Long reputation the business is secure. As they grow the Long's plan to hire workers and expand the shop. Mr. Long has developed a nonglare nonglare finish for guns know as "dynaloy" and if he can successfully market the innovation innovation there are future possibilities. A business graduate from ' the University of Guelph, Mr. Long says leaving the large Toronto firm to work in Cobourg -- transplanting his young family in the process process -- was a big step, and owning one's own business "is a little more exciting" than a desk job. "I'm working working with my hands and my brains here," he says with a note of pride. There's an array of guns in the small shop that boggles boggles the mind. Honed and polished, their blue steel gleaming, many shotguns fill the racks; this is, after all, first and foremost a hunter's shop. There are also rifles, the muzzle loaders loaders and others. There are, as well, ominous- looking, folding-stock carbines, very military in appearance. Mr. Long explains that folding survival rifles are primarily for someone like a bush pilot, who may need a rifle in an emergency. There is also the fringe, those would-be soldiers of fortune who read too many comic books and treat guns "like toys", says Mr. Long. "I don't like those people coming in my shop...we're geared for the serious shooter shooter here. We're not interested interested in these paramilitary, paramilitary, survivalist types, although although they are around," he says. The odd customer may come in with a $15,000 shotgun shotgun that needs a trigger repair, repair, but the majority of the through-the-door trade is hunters, needing repairs or looking for a new or used gun, such as the famous Winchester Model 12. "We try to tailor-fit the guns. Preventing the public from making mistakes is part of it. We're interested in safety, making sure people are not going out an making dangerous mistakes. mistakes. What you try to do is prevent some guy going rabbit rabbit hunting with a humungous humungous gun...that sort of thing," Mr. Long says. "What I'm really not interested interested in are the type of customers that come in here when I'm not around," Mr. Long says with a smile. The break and enter crowd he says, should be kept at bay by what is one of the most sophisticated alarm systems in the town, complete complete with motion sensors and other alarms that are hooked up directly with the police. "And there's the alligator, alligator, too," he adds. The "alligator" is a cross between between a brush wolf and a husky; he's there to handle handle the after- hours customers. customers. "We're becoming a force in the industry," Mr. Long says. He concedes it may sound a bit hackneyed, but quality "isn't the number one job here...it's the only job." The Longs can fix or rebuild anything on a shotgun shotgun or rifle, from woodwork to the finest of sight adjustments. adjustments. Obsolete parts for old guns can be machined. Conversely, if it cannot, or should not for the sake of safety, be fixed, they'll not hesitate to say so. That's what makes a gunsmith's gunsmith, according according to Keith Long.
