A Newcastle councillor has helped replace a family heirloom lost by one of the young crewmen from the Tall Ships. "It was a way of saying thanks," said Ward One Regional Councillor Ann Cowman. An avid sailor herself, herself, she is among the thousands of Canadians who enjoyed the recent visits by the Tall Ships to Canadian ports. "I did it because I have a lot of admiration for those who sail these ships," she said. The councillor explained that while some of the ships were visiting visiting Oshawa, she learned of the plight of Bob Cooper, an 18-year-old sailor on board the Ciudad de Inca. She discovered that the native of Stirling, Scotland had lost all of his personal possessions when the Tall v V V f L --0) y /' :• . .. v ■ .V V-iv Ship Marques foundered on the coast of Bermuda last month. Councillor Cowman, along with a number of Oshawa councillors immediately immediately went to work on a way to give the young man back his heritage. heritage. They decided to find a replacement replacement kilt which would be presented to the crewman as a bicentennial gift- , . , Councillor Cowman explained that the tartan was relatively rare. It is from the clan of Stuart Appen, in hunting shades. She noted that George Webster, owner of Rickaby's Limited, in Bowmanville, helped her to locate the material. She finally found the cloth in Barrie, where eight yards of the red and green fabric were sewn into a new kilt by Mary Strewth. The kilt was hastily completed and sent to Hamilton in time for a presentation to the young Scot dur- ingan official reception on Sunday. "He was ecstatic," recalls Councillor Councillor Cowman. Councillor Cowman explained that half of the kilt's $400 cost was borne by the Ontario Bicentennial program. The remainder was collected collected from members of Oshawa council and herself. "It was a spontaneous spontaneous gesture done in a hurry," the Newcastle Councillor said. In return for her gift, the councillor councillor was invited to spend Monday cruising on board the Inca from Hamilton to Niagara on the Lake. PC Candidate to Concentrate on Jobs Durham-Northumberland's incumbent incumbent MP launched his fifth federal federal election campaign last week at a nomination meeting attended by close to 500 Progressive Conservatives Conservatives at Clarke High School. Allan Lawrence told his supporters supporters at the July 25 meeting that economic issues will dominate the OPP Chase Ends Near Cobourg Ontario Provincial Police pursued pursued a car approximately 60 kilometres early Tuesday morning, before the vehicle was halted near Cobourg. There were no injuries. The OPP detachment at Newcastle Newcastle reports that the incident began at approximately 4:35 a.m. when a cruiser stopped to inspect a vehicle which was on the shoulder of Highway Highway 401 near Newcastle Village. This vehicle sped eastward, with the OPP cruiser, in pursuit. At a point east of Cobourg, the fleeing vehicle attempted to cross the median median and enter the westbound lanes. Shortly afterward, it left the road and the driver was arrested. An 18-year-old Toronto resident has been charged with dangerous driving and engaging police in a pursuit. He is scheduled to appear in court at Bowmanville on August 14. Police from the OPP detachment in Newcastle were assisted by Ontario Ontario Provincial Police at Cobourg. None of the police vehicles involved involved in the pursuit was damaged. campaign of 1984. And he blamed the 16 years of Liberal government for economic woes facing Canada today. "Jobs are the key to economic recovery recovery in this country," Mr. Lawrence Lawrence said, adding that jobs will mean lower taxes and a reduction in the deficit which is an economic millstone around the taxpayers' necks. The incumbent also singled out high interest rates as a major economic ill. The rates of 15 per cent hurt home-buyers, small businesses, businesses, and every sector of the economy. economy. "How anyone could start off their lives today facing that high an interest rate is simply beyond me," said Mr. Lawrence. He added that the government itself itself must borrow money at high rates of interest and this contributes contributes towards the staggering federal deficit. Mr. Lawrence pointed out that Electorate Responsible For Checking Voters' List The task of enumerating an estimated estimated 53,000 voters in Durham- Northumberland ends tomorrow, August 2. But, citizens in urban areas have until August 17 to ensure ensure that their names are on the voters' voters' list. Jean Capeling, returning officer for Durham Northumberland, said last week that close to 300 people began the door-to-door task of compiling compiling the voters' list on Friday, July 27. Enumerators are appointed by the returning officer and nominated nominated by candidates of the two parties parties who receieved the most votes in the latest federal election. Voters who are on the list should be notified through a card which will arrive in the mail by August 13. Mrs. Capeling also pointed out that because this is a summer election, election, residents who know they will 1; ; be away from home during enumeration enumeration may leave the data required by the enumerator with a neighbour. neighbour. "It's up to the elector to check and make sure the name has been put on the list and has not been forgotten," forgotten," said Mrs. Capeling. Unless an urban voter has been placed on the list by August 17, he or she won't be able to participate in the September 4 election. But rural electors face a different set of rules. If they are not on the voter's list, they may still be entitled entitled to a ballot if they produce a neighbour who will identify them as a resident of the riding before the deputy returning officer. Voters needing additional information information are asked to call the office of the chief returning officer for Durham-Northumberland at 885- 4594. the Conservative government of Joe Clark was able to set interest rates lower than those of the United States and he added that the Liberal Liberal government could have done likewise. "Interest rates can be fixed. Interest rates can be kept stable by the federal government no matter what happens in the U.S.," he said. But the Durham-Northumberland Durham-Northumberland MP also stated that improvements improvements in the economic picture will only occur if genuine changes are made in Ottawa. "Turner was part of the Trudeau regime and the Trudeau goverment then and don't you forget it," Mr. Lawrence said. He argued that the Turner cabinet offers no departure from line Trudeau regime. Twenty-three of the 28 "new" faces in the Turner cabinet are left over from the Trudeau years, Mr. Lawrence explained. "I see exactly the same faces in the same economic portfolios." "Believe me, the policies are the same, the people are the same, the ideas -- if they have any -- are the same and the corruptive patronage is the same," said Mr. Lawrence. But, You Should See the Other Guyl Do you recognize this man? It's none other than Statesman reporter Peter Parrott who tried to lose his nose for news, while cycling on Saturday morning. Peter found that gravel and bicycles do not make a good combination, especially when the rider finds himself going over the handlebars. The end result was a broken nose, broken finger, plenty of stitches and a few scrapes and bruises. Anyway, Peter is back on the jôb after being put back together at Memorial Hospital. o X CONGRATULATIONS NEWCASTLE - On Monday, August 6, the merchants of Newcastle's Main Street will be celebrating the official opening of their newly reconstructed downtown area.
