Use Axes Safely this Summer Holiday Knives and axes and saws are dangerous, particulary in the hands of unskilled people. Yet, in the summer time, at a cottage or a camp, we all become woodsmen, cleaning fish, cutting wood, opening cans with a knife because it's macho. If you're involved in some activity that really calls for the use of a knife, have your fun, but says St. John Ambulance, Ambulance, use it safely. Make sure it's sharp. Use a folding folding knife if that's sensible >h MIDWAY MIDWAY MIDWAY MIDWAY MIDWAY § § O Home of the Fuel Economy Car g MIDWAY MOTORS Q 1300 Dundas SI. Otherwise, if you're walking, carry'your knife in a sheath on your hip, so that if you fall, it's behind'you. If you're cutting wood, make sure falling trees or branches can't do any harm. If you must use an axe, wear protective shoes and pants. When you are using an axe, make sure your hands are lower than the axe head when it strikes its target. This ensures the head won't glance off and onto your feet or legs. When you can, use a saw instead, for safety's sake. If anyone does suffer a severe severe cut, you must act quickly. Get pressure on the wound immediately, with a clean dressing, shirt or towel if you can, with your bare hand if you must. Get the victim to sit or lie down and elevate the injured injured area. Keep pressure on the cut. If the dressing becomes blood soaked, leave it there and add another. Watch the victim for signs of shock, and reassure him. Tie the pressure bandage firmly in place without cutting cutting off circulation, and get medical help for the victim as soon as you can. Severe bleeding is one of the priorities of first aid because because it threatens life. St. John Ambulance offers a two and a half hour first aid course called the Lifesaver, which covers basic first aid skills for life threatening situations.
