t l 22 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, August 8,1984 anb Blatant Past 50 Years ago Thursday, August 2nd, 1931 We see that by the Lindsay Post that a well known Bowmanville boy, Mr. C.M. Murdoff, popular manager of the Dominion Stores in that prosperous northern town, is again a prize winner in a business-getting contest. The Post says: "A contest which has been under way for two weeks between a group of 66 Dominion Stores has just been concluded, with the local manager, Mr. C.M. Murdoff winning second prize, which entitles him to a week's holiday with pay and a cash prize as well. The local store, under Mr. Murdoff, stood 2nd in volume of regular business." Mr. and Mrs. Murdoff and daughter Borea are now enjoying holidays at Bowmanville Beach. The annual picnic of the Courtice and Everson families was held on Wednesday, July 25th, at Hampton Park. A splendid program of sports was enjoyed under the leadership of Stan. On Saturday, July 21st, the annual Prout picnic was held at the beautiful home of Mr, Alex. Prout, south of Kurv Inn. EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS The number of clients unemployed and registered for work at the Canada Employment Centres in Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa for the month of July totalled 14,757. Placements in the three offices totalled 312 for the month, which compares to a total of 384 placements during June. The majority of clients were registered in Clerical and related; Sales; Service; Product Fabricating, Assembling and Repairing, Construction Trades ; Material Handling and related. During July, the greatest 'employment opportunities existed in Electrical and Electronic products ; Construction; Retail and Wholesale Trade; Food and Beverage. In July, eight- new trainees started in Industrial Training Programs ; six on the job training and two apprentices, at a cost of $24,969. These people will benefit from both training and employment in the Region of Durham At the end of July, there were 132 students in the skill coursés sponsored by the Canada Employment Centre and 45 people receiving academic upgrading at Durham College. The lucky lads were Vincent Molloy, Adrien Deman, Arnold Deman, Gordie Rundle, Ron McDonald, Bill McLean, Bill Brown and Cory Vermeulen.
