Reynolds 6-1 and 6- 1 when the Bowmanville and Lindsay club met recently. Colin Bertwistle and Arnold Lobb defeated Rev. Hart and Chas. Richmond of Lindsay, 6-1 and 6-2. FLASHBACK -- 10 YEARS AGO -- Marilyn Hogg, John Colmer and Eddy Oegema were the winners of the Newcastle Recreation Department's Department's Frisbee contest held at Memorial Park, last week. TOURNAMENT -- Anyone interested in entering the Rice Lake Hockey Association annual Lobb Ball Tournament August 24 - 25 - 26th, please contact Ron Robinson 786-2554. Games to be played played at Garden Hill and Bewdley. Free dance. TENNIS -- The Elizabeth Arden sponsored tennis tournament will take place August 10th and 11th at the Bowmanville Tennis Club. Finals will be held on Saturday. Spectators welcome. CERTIFICATION -- The Oshawa YWCA will be offering the YWCA Fitness Certification Program Program during the winter of 1985. The program involves involves 40 hours of classroom teaching and practical practical sessions plus a supervised apprenticeship period. This nationally recognized program has been designed to meet the need for high quality training of fitness leaders. It can be administered only by course conductors accredited by the YWCA of Canada. On that day people all across Canada will be running, walking or jogging to help perpetuate Terry's dream that a cure for cancer will be found. CYCLING -- The Port Hope Sesquicentennial Committee announces a premier cycling event to be held in Port Hope on Saturday, August 11th. Two participants in the 1984 Olympics have accepted an invitation to compete as well as other internationally known cyclists. A novice race and celebrity race will also be an added attraction. GET IN SHAPE -- The Port Hope Sports Complex has ice time for rent at the arena during August. Phone 885-2474 if interested in booking time. PET CONTEST -- If you think that your dog or cat is the best in the area, then here's your chance to prove it. The Bowmanville Museum will be sponsoring a Pet Contest next Thursday, August 9th, with prizes in several categories. See their advertisement in the Statesman's Coming Events column for more details. JUNIOR C HOCKEY -- Cobourg arena will be the sight of an "Elite" sports Junior C fitness camp, starting Aug. 27 and running until Aug. 31. It will consist of one and one-half hour workouts per day, including a 30 minute aerobic workout with a female instructor as seen on TV. The camp is open for all players from minor midget to Jr. C who would like to get in shape for September tryouts. The camp runs from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. each day finishing with a full scrimmage on Friday with refs. For information and applications call 372- 9321. Deadline is Aug. 24. FOR MEN TOO -- Fall registration for the Y.W.C.A. for Bowmanville, Newcastle, Orono and Oshawa begins Wednesday, August 15th. Did you know that approximately 25 per cent of the program participants are male? For men there is a change room with showers and all the same services such as the lounge, kitchen, and juice machine enjoyed by our women participants. Men are invited to join the following programs. Co-Ed Aerobics, Yoga, Ballroom Dancing, Craft Programs, Stress Management, Badminton Club, Squash, Microwave Cooking, Micro Computer Programs, Social Badminton, Bridge Club and Positive Parenting. Bowmanville Golf Club Holds Junior Clinic Pam Welsh, wife of Bowmanville Golf Club professional Bruce Welsh, has been busy the past few Saturdays providing a free golf clinic for junior girls. The golfers have received instruction in all parts of the game including rules and etiquette. Above, Pam gives some pointers to golfer Jill Rushak while the rest of the class looks on. Legion Pee Wees Receive Awards Two members of the Bowmanville Legion pee wee baseball team were among the top pitchers and batters to receive awards during a recent EOBA championship tournament held in Bowmanville on the weekend. Pitcher Derek Zander (left) was a runner up in the pitching division. He had a record of 7 and 3 for the season. Colin Dempster was the league's top batter with an average of .571. The award-winners in the pitching category were Cameron Nekkers (Oshawa, 7 and 0) Greg Kealy (Peterborough, 6 and 1) and Derek Zander (Bowmanville, 7 and 3). Winning batters were Colin Dempster (Bowmanville, .571), Mike Fulton (Whitby, .542), and Greg Kealy (Peterborough, .521). Awards were presented at the pee wee tournament Friday, August 3. Elizabeth ville Miss Mary Alice While, the Pas Man., arrived last week for a three week holiday with her parents Mr. and Mrs. IT. White. Wendy White, Toronto, along with her boy friend were with Mr. and Mrs. White on the weekend. They attended a family picnic on Sunday, of Mrs. While's family. Mrs. C. Mercer visited with Mrs. Olive Little, Kendal, on Monday. Mrs. Little has injured injured her ankle. Sunday services were held at Allan Peter's on Highway Two. A good crowd assembled. assembled. Canton choir provided the music. Two members sang a duet and the group sang an anthem. Mr. Bickle played the organ. Rev. Mr. Mark Peacock had his girl friend, Miss Linda Stothart, Port-Hope, with his parents for the weekend. Mrs. J. Peacock injured her ankle recently but it is improving now, Recently I heard that one of the Leggett boys had won a horse riding competition at the Calgary stampede last month. He was in the Amateur Saddle Bronc contest. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Win. Leggett. He is attending college. college. In 1982 he attended Montana College, last year it was Red Deer, Alberta, and is going back to Red Deer this year. Bowmanville Tykes Play in Tournament ATOM HOCKEY -- Tryouts for the Bowmanville Toros Major Atom hockey club continue tonight (Wed.) at 7:30 in Harman Park Arena, Oshawa. Other practices are scheduled for Wed., Aug. 15th at 7:30 and Thurs., Aug. 30th at 7:30. For details, please call 623-7142. When you go away, the need for blood doesn't. This past weekend, the Bowmanville All-Star Tykes travelled to Byron, Ontario to participate in a baseball tournament. The team played Kingsville on Saturday afternoon and Harrow in an early Sunday morning game. Unfortunately the Bowmanville Tykes lost both games. However, Sunday afternoon was different. The Bowmanville Bowmanville team were finally hitting and defeated Tillsonburg 12 - 3 with sparkling play from everyone on the team. Pitcher Jason Kiley struck out nine batters with great support from catcher Mike Flynn. The Tykes tackle Cobourg here Wed., Aug. 8 to decide who goes to the All-Ontario Championships.
