Education Announcment Education Minister Dr. Bette Stephenson last week announced the appointment of Dr. Bernard Shapiro, the Director of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, as a one-man Commission to enquire into the role and status of private schools in the province's education system. "Few people are aware of the diversity that exists in the private school sector, and of the important historical contribution that these schools have made to education in Ontario," Dr. Stephenson said. She said that she has asked Dr. Shapiro to document this contribution and to advise her on the future relationships they might have with the public education system and the government. Dr. Shapiro will be assisted in his work by a 15-member advisory committee and a small secretariat headed by Neal Emery, formerly a superintendent of education in the Ministry's Central Ontario Regional Office. Photo by Piper Studio Kevin Kossatz has successfully successfully auditioned to become a member of the Ontario Youth Choir '84. This choir is a project of the Ontario Choral Federation. One hundred and twenty young people, aged 16 to 23, from across Ontario auditioned in March for a place in the choir. Of this number only 42 were selected. They represent the finest singing talent in the province. These selected individuals gather for two weeks of training during August at Lakefield College School, near Peterborough, under the direction of Barbara Clark. A day involves a sectional rehearsal, a private voice lesson, rehearsals with the whole choir, and time out for tennis, waterfront activities and informal entertainment. The vocal coaches are well- known singers, Catherin Robbin and Mark Pedrotti. In late September, the choir reassembles for final rehearsals then embarks on a regional one-week tour of Ontario. Audiences in large and small communities will receive visits from the choir and the singers experience the joys and challenges of a professional level tour. Kevin Kossatz was a scholarship winner in the 1984 Oshawa Kiwanis Music Festival. He attends Courtice High School and is a chorister in St. George's Memorial Church Choir, Oshawa. Pontypool News PONTYPOOL NEWS Congratulations to Doreen and Ken Benford of R.R. 1 Pontypool, who were married in Peterborough last week. Kay Youngman, Marilyn Jackson and family were recent callers at the Leslies in London. Again a few days later, Kay, daughter Linda and family travelled to London, visited Story Book Gardens and spent the night with Maida and Bill Robertson. Robertson. On their way home they toured Ontario Place. Speedy get-well wishes are sent to Paul Richardson who is on crutches following an ankle injury. On Tuesday, August 21st, an "All You Can Eat Salad Bar Luncheon" sponsored by the Pre-School Resource Centre, is being held in Pontypool Community Centre. Tom and Cathy Badluk recently returned home following following a two-week holiday in the Maritimes, Don and Debbie Timms of Bethany have purchased the home of Mrs. Beulah Forrest on Hwy. 35, north of Ballyduff. They will be moving at the end of August. The Hoar and Sytnyk families spent last weekend camping at Emily Park. Bill and Sophie Verkruisen have had as house guests for two weeks, Sophie's two sisters and a niece from Holland. The visitors have returned home after holidaying holidaying with other relatives in Ontario. The 1984 Olympics are over but what a glorious finish! Canada should indeed be proud of its athletes who brought home 44 medals altogether altogether -10 gold, 18 silver and 16 bronze and finished in fourth place behind United States, West Germany and Romania. The Manvers Historical Society has received word that a "Journey into Yesterday" is being undertaken by Ontario Trail Riders. This Journey will take place along scenic and historic routes of Yesterday, Yesterday, starting from the west at Depot Harbour near Parry Sound and from the east at Timbertown on the Ottawa River near Renfrew. A rendezvous was held in Whitney on August 4th, with the Trail Riders continuing on, hoping to complete their journey near Georgetown on August 25th.
