Ed Bird, Geoff Green, Brad Bamsey two, got the Oriole hits. By John Morris On Tuesday, August 7, our girls travelled to Ajax to play their "A" team. Although Dennison's lost by the score of 4 - 0, the girls played superbly and the game was much closer than the score indicated. Bowmanville started each half strongly but unfortunately unfortunately for us the Ajax goalie was able to thwart our scoring chances. The Ajax girls also played a strong game and were able to capitalize on their opportunities. If you think back to last Tuesday, you'll remember it was another of those hot muggy days we've been having. In this kind of weather, our girls were caught short handed with several away on vacation. As a result, we went to Ajax with only 11 players, exactly the number you need to play the game, out...there was no coming off to take needed breathers. Ajax on the other hand was able to substitute freely and as the game wore on this advantage became obvious. obvious. Undoubtly, this was a major factor in the outcome of the game. This was a total team commitment with all the girls turning in a complete effort. Crystal Courneya moved back from her usual defense position position and played well in goal. Myka Dickenbrock, Sarah Couch and Alyssa McClennan played a strong game on defense, defense, with Alyssa and Myka clearing the ball from our end, several times with strong kicks. Our halfbacks, Jessica Knoop, Stephanie Noble and Christina Thrasher all played well, with Christina stopping the Ajax girls on several rushes. Our forwards, Allison Morris, Christine West, Tracey Michaud and Susan McCullough " played very strong games, putting pressure pressure on Ajax on numerous occasions. Sarah Couch played a dual role, as several times she moved up to try and add extra strength to our attack. This writer had the pleasure to step in as coach this week as regular coach A1 Cole was on holidays. My thanks go to the parents for their support and co-operation. My thanks also to tne girls! You played an excellent game, listened well, tried as hard as you could and didn't give up. This "never say die" attitude was typified by two of our girls. Both were hurt in this rough, tiring game, but refused to come off. for a rest as they knew it would make the team short- handed. Instead both got right back into the game. On Tuesday, August 14, our girls again travel to Ajax, this time to play the "B" team. Good luck to the girls and returning coach A1 Cole as they try to get back on the winning track as the playoffs draw closer. PEACOCK LUMBER LTD. Building supplies.
