I 16 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, August 29,1984 Van Belle On Gardening Area Lawns are Severely Damaged by the Chinchbug This lawn insect has done its damage again this year. Driving Driving through the subdivisions yesterday, you can spot lawn after lawn that has brown patches and likely the work of the Chinchbug. The damage usually does not show until it has been done. Most people will feel that the brown patches are caused by the dry summer months, and now that we have had extensive rain the grass that has not been affected is turning its beautiful beautiful green color again and then of course the brown patches show up. The Chinchbug is a very small insect about 5 mm. long, black with white patches on the wings. To understand how they live, you have to know the life cycle of the insect. In the spring the Chinchbug emerges after hibernating in the grass. The female then starts to lay eggs up to 20 daily, up to 20 to 30 days, then the eggs hatch in about seven to 10 days, first turning into nymphs which feed on the grass then mature in a month. These mature adults will lay eggs again for up to three generations and the cycle is repeated, especially especially during hot and humid weather. This is the reason that the worst damage is usually done in late August and during the month of September and October. To Liberty Belies Starts Sept. 4 at 1:30 p.in. Sharp Team No. l - C. Roberts, M. East, Bowmanville 623-4004 eliminate this insect problem you must break the cycle or else the adults will again go down into the grass roots and hibernate for the winter and next year the problem will increase. It is easy to tell if you have Chinchbugs in the lawn, spray the suspected area with warm water and then place a white cloth over it and the insects will crawl into the cloth. There are several sprays on the market that will control this insect. Sevin is probably the safest and the most effective effective to use. Diazinon is also an excellent product to use. With the new metric system it is often hard to know how much to use. A 500 ml. bottle will do about 4000 sq. ft. It should be applied at the rate of 15 ml. to 15 litres of water which will do about 10 sq. metre, translated this is three tablespoons in three gallons of water applied to 350 sq. feet. So if your lot is 40 by 100 sq. feet you will need a 500 ml. bottle of either Sevin or Diazinon. For good control you must get the spray into the thatch zone where the insect is working, so lots of water to wash it down to the thatch zone is required, then do not water the lawn for two to three days so the insecticide will do a good job. Sometimes a second application is required to finish the job. A new product product has also been introduced called Chlorpyrifos, it will also do a good job on Chinchbug control. Some of the fertilizers have an insecticide mixed through the fertilizer and will give good results, but must be watered in to get good control. Tent caterpillars are a common common problem this year and should be checked. The tents are attached to the branches and filled with worms who feed on the foliage and defoliate defoliate the trees causing considerable considerable harm, since the tree has to go into the winter in a weakened condition. Tents can be cut out of the tree and then burned completely. This must be done after sundown or before sunup to get the most worms who go back to their tents during the night. You can also spray them with Diazinon or Sevin, again it must be done late at night or early in the morning. Soak the tents thoroughly, and repeat again after six to eight days to clean up any insects that are left. Give the tree a dormant spray in late March or early April before the leaves appear, this will kill the overwintering overwintering egg masses and keep them healthy for the season.
