NOW MORE THAN EVER, ITS TIME FOR A REAL CHANGE ROY GRIERSON DURHAM NORTHUMBERLAND Authorized by Fred McLaughlin, official agent for Roy Grierson, Durham Northumberland New Democratic Party By Norm Smith Les Langs, Treasurer of the Bowmanville Lawn Bowling Club for many years and now living in Ajax, came out of retirement on Wednesday, August 22,1984 to present the prize for High Two-Game Winner in the tournament for Men's Pairs for which he donated a trophy in 1980. The trophy was won by Wally Reid of Cobourg and Don Ross of Tillsonburg who edged out by one point the Lindsay pair of Syd Elsdon and Bill Tewksbury. Tewksbury. The latter had previously previously won the trophy three times. While these two visiting teams took the first two prizes, all the players, including including the winners, were delighted delighted that Les had not lost his touch. With his old playing partner, Clarence Oke, as skip, Les disposed of Jack Rowland and Dick Jiggins of Port Hope 17 - 9 in the first game and then A1 Hoskin and Martin Foxhall of Cobourg 21 plus four to eight in the second game which was noteworthy for four ends of which "our boys" scored four points. Their cumulative total of 38 plus four set them against Reid and Ross in the third game but despite a gallant finish (they scored six in the 12th and 13th ends) they lost 12 -16. >, MIDWAY MIDWAY MIDWAY MIDWAY MIDWAY g ^ jg Ü 1 ' I ' ^EfEESZi ■ - r.unv.r.Y r/o, an- ' ~ ' ^ n,'t Üfëfe b- M i jSSSScaia I t) m s ^ Home of the Fuel Economy Car ^ | MIDWAY MOTORS 1 Q 1300 Dundas St. E„ Whitby 668-6828 ^ § MIDWAY MIDWAY MIDWAY MIDWAY MIDWAY We are NOW OPEN to serve you * Free Delivery * Name Brand Products Checkout our specials . . . why pay more? LANGE'S PHOTO LAB INC. 50 King St. E. -- 623-2568 -- Bowmanville Colwell - Cascagnette The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, August 29,1984 All eight greens were filled with entries from Bowmanville Bowmanville (four), Cobourg (two), Highland Creek (two), Lindsay (three), Oshawa, Port Hope (two) and Whitby (two) when President Peter Bathgate welcomed the visitors visitors at 10 a.m. on a cool, overcast day. Ross Hall and Peter Bathgate of Bowmanville Bowmanville made a strong start against Clyde Robinson and Partner of Highland Creek scoring 21 plus five to three. This score pitted them against John Morrison and Gerry Oatway of Oshawa and they looked to be headed for a big score when they put in six shots in the first end. But Morrison is an old campaigner and managed, to draw level at seven all after eight ends and again to 10 all after 13 ends only to see Ross and Peter take the game with two on the last end. With a total of 33 plus five they looked to be poised to win a prize until they met Elsdon and Tewksbury in the last game in which they scored only eight against 19. Their total score of 41 plus five was far too low to get them into the prize list. Other prize winners were as follows: 2nd High Two-Game Winner: Ned Town and Ernie Buckenham of Port Hope with 50; High One-Game Winner: Brian Hughes and Harold Bennett of Bowmanville with 45: 2nd High One-Game Winner Winner Mike Reynolds and Stuart Carson with 42. Mike and Stu almost pulled off the upset of the day by pushing Elsdon and Tewksbury to an extra end in the second game, only to see their doughty opponents win that end and the game. In response to President Bathgate's thanks to Les Langs for his generosity to his old club, Les told everybody how pleased he was to be bowling again with his old friends and expressed the belief of all present that it had been a wonderful day in spite of the showers that had occurred occurred during the afternoon. Delicious refreshments provided provided by the ladies of the club, aided by a cash donation from Les Langs who also augmented augmented the prize money, were served between the second and third games by Rena Bathgate, Thelma Bennett, Mabel Mavin and Ann Park. Elsewhere in the District the Bowmanville team of Clarence Oke (skip) with Mabel and Ah Mavin won the prize for high one-game winner winner in the Churchley tournament tournament at Port Hope on Aug. 25. Oscar Wollstein and Peter Bathgate won two games in the Weeks tournament , at Whitby on Aug. 26 but did not qualify for a prize. Insurance!
