Durham College Holds Opening of New High Tech Building Durham College held an official opening of its new Skilled Trades and High Technology building on Tuesday August 28th. The new wing will allow the College to accommodate up to 600 more students. On hand for the opening opening ceremonies were (left to right) the College's Board Chairman, Nigel Schilling; College President, Mel Garland; Ontario Minister of Education and Minister of Colleges and Universities, Dr. Bette Stephenson; and Frank Miller, Ontario Minister of Industry and Trade. Durham College will be able to accommodate up to 600 more students students this fall due to a new Skilled Trades and High Technology Building Building which officially opened Tuesday, Tuesday, August 28th. The two-storey addition encompasses encompasses approximately 36,000 square feet. This will provide extra classroom and instructional space in the main building and allow Durham to discontinue the nogrowth nogrowth policy adopted last year due to lack of space. When the building is completely finished and equipped, the total investment investment will be approximatley $7.3 million. This figure also includes includes the cost of equipping and expanding the library, cafeteria, and student lounge in the main building. The new Skilled Trades and Technology Wing is an L-shaped structure located on the east side of the main building. It provides for both High Technology and Apprenticeship Apprenticeship instructions, and enhances College training for Computer Integrated Integrated Manufacturing. Instructional space in the new building will consist of five classrooms classrooms and a large lecture theatre. Also included will be laboratories for process control, motor controls, robotics and microcomputers, electronics electronics and fibre optics. On hand for the opening ceremonies ceremonies were Dr. Bette Stephenson, Stephenson, Ontario Minister of Education and Minister of Colleges and Universities; Universities; and Frank Miller, Ontario Minister of Industry and Trade. The ministers were introduced by College College President Mel Garland and the College's Board Chairman, Nigel Schilling.
